Getting ready to start working up a new load for my 300 WSM. I haven't decided on a bullet yet. Probably a 180 of some sort. I have numerous 7mm and smaller and 338 and bigger so figured a 180 in the WSM would fill the gap.
Experiences?

Wouldn't worry about that little of velocity gain, if any. RE22 should give you the best accuracy, something much more important. Jay

Mine likes H4350 for 180 grainers...64-65 grains and just a hair shy of the lands for OAL, 2955 fps.
It also has an affinity for 4895 in 150-168 grain bullets of whatever variety.
H4831SC showed promise with 200 grain Sierra gamekings.
H414, VN560, Magpro, and H4831SC gave 1"-1.5" groups with all bullets 180 and below. For accuracy, mine (M70 Classic Stainless) likes slightly faster powders than you would use for optimum velocity, but I'll give up 50-100 fps for groups going from 1.25" to .6-.75" (with matchkings or Ballistic Tips)...YMMV!
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

I've used RL19, RL22, H4831sc, H4350 and Ramshot Hunter in the 300 WSM. As I like temp insensitive powders RL19 and 22 (as well as H414) are out. RL22's velocity swing from hot to cold is severe and the damn stuff frankly freaks me out in its lot to lot variation.
Ramshot Hunter is showing REAL promise in accuracy and velocity... it might replace H4350 as my favorite powder in this cartridge... we'll see.
For what it's worth, I really like the Win powders. For the 300 WSM, I exclusively use Win 760. An added benefit if you have a hand thrower, is that it flows like water.

Thanks guys. I have never tried any of the Win powders. I have also not had any temp problems with RL22. Since I used to use MRP and could no longer get it. I get my powder now in big cans or bottles so lot variations are not really an issue. I agree with those that give up velocity for accuracy. I've never been in a situation where 100+/- made a difference.
Going to try RL22 first and go from there.

RR,
I really like the Win powders. Besides loading it in medium caliber magnums, I also like it for highpower rifle. I use a Win 748 in 223 where virtually everyone else I shoot with uses Varget. I just like the way the powder loads and shoots.

My Browning .300 WSM loves the 180g TSX and RE-19. But, I haven't loaded any RE-22. I've not seen temp sensitivity with the RE powders, but then I don't live in Montana, either.

Join www.ammoguide.com for about $18 a year. They show 125 loads for 300WSM in bullet weights from 100 grains to the heaviest .308-calibre bullets out there. You can also filter your loads by bullet weight, bullet manufacturer, bullet type, powder designation and powder manufacturer. It's a fabulous site and just overflowin' with data and information about "gun stuff." I'm a member on his second scrip, I love it so much...
My personal load (not from ammoguide) for my target 300WSM is 65 grains of RL-22 under the 180-grain Sierra MatchKing, seated to come just a red hair from kissin' the lands. A second is 65 grains of H4831SC under the same bullet, again seated the same as the first. I get approximately 2910 fps out of each load...

I worked up loads with H-414,RL-19.RL-22.IMR 4350and RL-17.Out of those RL-22,IMR4350 andRL-17 were the best from 90 XTP bullets to 190gr matchkings. It seems that the RL-17 was the cooler of the lot for repeated shots.Good Luck

I have just dialed in my new semi custom Sako 85 in 300WSM at the weekend.
I have settled on Vhit N560 using 74 grains and a Rem 9.5 standard primer which is pushing out a 165 grn BT at 3200 feet.
I have taken this load from the Speer reloading data from the old shortmags site but I notice it is 2.6 grns over max listed when comparing it to the Vhit manual! I can't see any obvious pressure signs. Primers still have rounded edges and no cratered firing pin mark etc although I know this is not the definitive for checking pressure.
The barrel is a #4 fluted Pac Nor 24" and 10 twist. The action is bedded into a McMillan stock and this is what I am getting as a result:-
First target is with Vhit and the second is using RL22. You will notice that this rifle has a preference for standard primers as opposed to magnum ones.
And also some of the rifle too:-
Needless to say I am delighted with the performance I am getting out of this rig by using Vhit N560.
Didn't mean to hi jack the thread by the way but is was a very pertinent question to me due to the fcat I dialed this in last weekend.
Cheers

Have used rl-22, rl-19, and am now trying rl-17 which also looks promising. A reduced load of rl-17, two grains under max pushing Nosler e-tips was accurate and deadly on a large mulie and a elk. The 300 wsm is not a modest caliber for deer or elk, but I have never seen six or eight chards of bone exiting animal on the offside shoulder before.
