I have a quantity of 45-70 brass that has the plating worn off to varying degrees. Could this have been tumbled too long? The headstamps are clear and sharp so I don't think it could be over use. OAL is damn near perfect.???? smoker1 The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. --Thomas Jefferson

Over tumbling is a possibility. It sounds like you don’t know how many times they have been reloaded so the plating may have just been worn from resizing and when they got cleaned up by tumbling, you get what you have. The plating could have been on the thin side from the get go. This is why I don’t buy used brass. I don’t know their history. I can check them with my micrometers and calipers, making sure they’re safe but I just don’t buy used anymore. If I inherit brass from a friend or neighbor I just throw them in my recycling bucket. PS If anyone wants to go through my recycling bucket,,, I’ll check the price of scrap brass that day and we’ll talk. LOL

Never had a problem buying used brass. Course I don't run to the limit either. This stuff ran 1.5 days in my tunblers by accident...Grandson forgot to turn them off. I just didn't pay attention to it when dumped them into the tray. I want to sell/trade them as I no longer shoot the caliber. Thanks for your input. smoker The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. --Thomas Jefferson

Is this Remington or Starline brass? Remington is notorious for having the plating flake off. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effective way to enslave them" - George Mason, co-author of the Second Amendment during the Virginia convention to ratify the Constitution

Remington and winchester. Plating isn't flaking it's just looks worn. I tried to take a photo but it makes them look too good . Someone said that the case was solid brass but I really can't see that. I'll tell you what it reminds me of. A cheap gold piece of jewlery that the finish is wearing off of. ???? http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y85/philmarpm/45-70BRASS.jpg The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. --Thomas Jefferson

For the life of me, I can't see ANY plating. It looks like all brass to me. The only kind of cartridge case plating I am familiar with is nickel plating. I see no evidence of that.

Wish I could get a better picture Dave. The damn camera wants to make them look too good . I just don't shoot that caliber anymore, although I'm keeping the old Trapdoor. Went to .444 Marlin...
