quote:Right, with 4198 and the like, you load it to where you get the best accuracy with cast bullets and that will depend a lot of your alloy. Don't expect them to shoot as well as jacketed at higher velocities unless they are very hard, which you do not want. 1380 is fine

Trying to find load data for this bullet using alliant reloader 7 or hogdons 4198. Havent been able to find much solid info searching other forums. Lots of loads from 36gr up to 52gr and everwhere in between. Some folks say to use the same data as i would for a 400gr jacketed bullet, which for me would be 49.5gr of re7 under a 400gr speer sp. I dont have a chrono to test velocities but id like to get it around the same as what the speers are, hoping to use the speers for deer and the cast for elk, bear, moose, bigfoot, chupacabra. Thanks in advance for any info and/or links to reliable data.

Ok here you go, from Lymancast bullet handbook 4th edition, 405 gr #2 alloy
Springfield rifles
IMR 4198 min 31.5 1312 fps max 35.0 1463 fps
RE #7 min 37.0 1534 fps max 39.0 1578 fps
Lever action
IMR 4198 min 36.5 1533 fps max 40.5 1717 fps
no RE#7 info
Ruger #1 and strong actions
IMR 4198 min 40.0 1684 fps max 44.5 1881 fps
RE #7 min 46.0 1785 max 51.0 1996 fps
Hope this helps, I use the 4198 lever action loads for the FM vault lock #2 rifle that I built and at 200 yds it will shoot a little over MOA 2"-2.75"

heere's what I would do .. take the starting load for the rifle in question for a jacketed 405 and work up
i REALLY favor GC bullets over just cast
