Trying to find load data for this bullet using alliant reloader 7 or hogdons 4198. Havent been able to find much solid info searching other forums. Lots of loads from 36gr up to 52gr and everwhere in between. Some folks say to use the same data as i would for a 400gr jacketed bullet, which for me would be 49.5gr of re7 under a 400gr speer sp. I dont have a chrono to test velocities but id like to get it around the same as what the speers are, hoping to use the speers for deer and the cast for elk, bear, moose, bigfoot, chupacabra. Thanks in advance for any info and/or links to reliable data.

I load a 460gr cast with 30grs of imr4198 for 1380fps.

Right, with 4198 and the like, you load it to where you get the best accuracy with cast bullets and that will depend a lot of your alloy. Don't expect them to shoot as well as jacketed at higher velocities unless they are very hard, which you do not want. 1380 is fine.
That is why you are seeing so much variability in the loads. Some have/like to use pistol powders for low velocity cast; I do not; use the medium burners like 3031 and 4198.
You can start with a full load and check accuracy; working down from there; sort of opposite of working "up" a load.
Reliable data is what your rifle and your bullets work well with. No one can give you that.
I use Goex Cartridge black powder under cast bullets; compress it 1/4 with a special plug, use a card wad, enough to seat your bullet. I also use duplex loads; ten percent 5744 under BP; do not compress that. Burns perfectly clean.
Oh, 5744 is perfect for cast bullets; get some of that; loads are on the can. like 30 grains.
Lots of ways to do it and only you can determine which works for you.

Both of those powders are similar in performance in this application. I’ve been using R-7 because I bought quite a bit of it at a good price.
I’ve used it behind my home cast 415 gr pills and found accuracy to be excellent and it didn’t really change much from 40 through to 48 grs. I settled on 45 grs as a good balance between recoil and velocity. That load clocked 1850fps out of a 22” bbl. Much more than that and it wasn’t really pleasant in a 7lb rifle.

I can tell you the hard cast 460gr @1380fps will shoot end to end on a 200lb hog.

I'm looking to load these 405gr gas checked for moose and bear out of my sbl

Hope this helps, I use the 4198 lever action loads for the FM vault lock #2 rifle that I built and at 200 yds it will shoot a little over MOA 2"-2.75"

I use 5744 powder w/ a 405 cast in my Trapdoor Springfield but I keep the pressures low. I have not choreographed it, but I would venture to say it is in the 1450 MV range.

And there in lies the issue I'm having, no lever gun data with re 7. I've had it suggested anywhere from 40 to 50gr ti 46 to 54gr

heere's what I would do .. take the starting load for the rifle in question for a jacketed 405 and work up

i REALLY favor GC bullets over just cast
