I am currently using IMR4350 in my .280 rem with 150gr. nosler ballistic tips in a 26" barrel. Is there a more efficient powder for this combination?

I like H4831 better.
I find less extreme spread in velocities
through out the year, with varying temps.
My .280 load is 58.0 gr. H4831,BR2,
Remington brass with the necks turned, flash hole deburred, and rims trued, Nosler 140 BT seated 10 thou off the lands.
Rifle is a Ruger M77 MK II,22" barrel.
I have tried this load in 4 diferent
.280's with very good results.
Barrels ranged in length from 22" to 27".
I have found the 140's to be more accurate
in my rifles than the 150's.
Good luck,
Z

My Ruger likes IMR 4831 with an 150g Rem CL. I don't know about efficiency, other than it kills deer, woodchucks, crows, cats, etc. DEAD, but I do seem to remember something about IMR 4831 producing very uniform preassures with this cartridge.

Take a look at the 280 thread in the favorite loads section. I have just gotten data from my recent loads and have posted the results there.

IMR4831 w/140 & 150 gr. bullets has been the most accurate and produced the highest velocity in both of my .280s.

Another vote for IMR 4831 and 139/140gr. bullets.

I agree ....IMR4831 with 140-150 grain bullets. Then IMR7828 for 175's. I have also had good results with H4831 but it can't produce the last bit of velocity like the IMR series seems to do.

Reloader 19 is about as good as it gets for all the popular hunting weights for the 280. I have a customised ruger in 280 22 inch barrel and can achieve 3150 fps. with reloader19 and 140 ballistic tip. Have not found a better powder though Imr 4831 is pretty good also. Best of luck!

Hey Z,
What kind of velocity are you getting out of the 58gr of H4831? I have been struggling with accuracy and speed with the IMR and H 4350's and IMR 4064. I have yet to try the 4831's.

In my Ruger with a 22" Barrel i get 2879 fps
with the 140's.
Spread is only 14 fps average.
This is using a Pact Chrono.
Temp at testing was 77 degrees.
This load has shown to be very accurate,
and will consistently group where all 5 shots touch at 100 yds,if i do my part.
My 14 yr old son can keep this load and rifle into 3/4" at 200 yds if he reads the wind right.
It is not the fastest load, but the deer don't know any better.
He has basicly taken over this one as i
am playing with my 30X8mm Mag more often now.

I had a Rem 742 that would put 3 shot's in 3/4" at 100yds with a Hornady 139gr bt, on top of 58gr of H-4831

Had a Rem 740 in 30-06 that wouldn't keep
5 shots on the target at 100 yds.
Sent it off to some chap in Maryland some
time back,good riddence.
You got lucky with yours, haven't seen many
of those do as well as yours does.
Kudos on your find.
