Has anyone had any experience with this combination, using 225 and 250 gr bullets? Any ideas/experiences will be appreciated....

I've tried Varget in the Whelen and didn't get very good results accuracy wise. Go with IMR4064 or R-15.

While not a 35 Whelen, I've had real good luck with Varget in my 338-06. Great velocity and <1" groups. This was with 200/210 gr bullets. I am biased, as I use Varget in a couple other cartridges as well, always with very good results. maxman

I prefer RL15 myself , but Varget works good in the Whelen and delivers about the same speed as RL15 in my rifle with a grain or two less powder .

Hodgdon has data for Varget and the Whelen on their website or in their newer load books ........

thanks for all the responses... I've got several pounds of varget that I got on sale before I got the Whelen... it would be good if I could work up a good load with it....

I use Varget in my Whelen and .308 and have not seen the need to even play with other powders. In the Whelen the favorite load is 58gr behind a 250gr Hornady for 2580fps, gets 1/2 moa from a Pacnor barrel at 100 yards. I dont have the .308 load in front of me but it pushes the 165 Deep-shok at 2800 fps and the 178 Amax at 2700fps, also with sub-moa accuracy. One note with varget is that it seems to be more consistent in regardds to accuracy and velocity when loaded at or near max. All of my loads are safe in my rifles and the primer pockets are still solid after 6 loadings so far.

I've used Varget in my Whelen. Both the original and after rechambering to Imp 40*. It gave excellent results for accuracy and velocity. Varget is temperature insensitive as are many of the new powders. I just started using RL15 and early results show it to be excellent also.
Give the Varget a try and let us know how it works for you.
