Got 5000 wrong primers in last order. Wondering if I can substitute in light 7/8, 1.0, and 1 1/8 oz loads. Been told "no, stick strictly to recipes", and "it's OK as new CCI mag are direct replacement for Fed209A" Anyone know for sure? NRA Patron Member

Mike the short answer is that it depends…… much depends on the load you are going to use. Many intentionally use magnum strength primers to reduce the amount of powder used and to insure good ignition in cold weather. Look at the data supplied by the powder manufacturer, they often list numerous primers for their various loads, if not give them a call or drop them a line they are very good at offering assistance. I would be hesitant to just sub primers as pressure can be affected. Unlike metallic reloading, shotshells do not always show pressure signs due to their lower working pressure. As always use a good scale to verify your powder drops as bushings seldom drop as per the charts. In short I am certain that you can use your CCI 209M’s in your reloads, you just need to check on the data. I have used them in the past in my reloads so I know the data is out there.

Well, I tested the 3 loads yesterday and all seemed well. It was very cold though and I have heard of using magnum primers in cold weather. Just sayin". NRA Patron Member
