Can anyone suggest a starting load for the Barnes 600 grain round nose #45860? - my normal load has been the Hornady 500 grain with 96.5 grains of 748, achieves excellent accuracy with very reasonable recoil (average 2365 fps w/ 23.5" barrel)- wish to utilize the 600 grain Barnes and hope to achieve an accurate load of approximately 2200 fps - any ideas?

90.5 grains of your 748 should give about the same the pressure as your 96.5/500 loads and about 2160 f/s Mike [ 08-28-2002, 10:59: Message edited by: Mike375 ]

Thanks for the information, I will work up some loads - I do not seek maximum velocity with the 600 gr. Barnes as I believe the bullet weight with 2100 - 2200 fps will be very respectable as far as penetration - looking for a moose load other than the 500 gr. Hornady - Would a load for the 450 Ackley and the 458 Lott be similar? I recall the 450 has a bit more capacity, again not seeking max power just information - thanks again - KMule

The 450 Ackley is the bigger case. The 450 will be around .505" at the shoulder and the 458 Lott will be around .480" at the point on its case. The 450 Ackley is probably about 6% or so bigger in case capacity. Thus velocities in the 450 Ackley would be lower (and so will pressure) than when the same load is used in the 458 Lott. Mike
