I need to work up some loads with the newer RL-17 Allient powder for the .348 Win.

Could one of you guys that's handier than I on the computer give me a starting point for 200 and 250 gr. bullets?

Not only is the specific bullet needed, the COAL is also critical to accurately predict interior ballistics.

wildcat junkie: But for many of bullets you can find recommended COAL in other reloading manuals (it is not dependent on powder used). That was also my point.

But for RL-17, QuickLoad doesn't work well. Will explain:

QL will shows higher velocities and pressures than in real, because it can't compute with some special properties of RL-17 (like surface treatment resulting in delayed start of burning or so). So if it is safe in QL, it will be absolutely safe in real world. I use this powder exclusively in .375 H&H and 8x57IS for many years, so have gained some experience with it.

I load RL-17 in 8X57, 7mm-08 & 30/40 Krag & yes, it runs about 3gr slower than predicted results. I use Mv for the predicted pressure, not charge weight.

For example, in 30/40 Krag I get 2500 fps W/160gr .308 FTX bulltes W/49.5grs of RL-17 which is predicted to be closer to 2700fps @ 46,000psi.

If one interpolates the actual Mv W/predicted charge weight/pressure it come out to what 46.6gr & 38,000psi would yield. I use actual Mv to estimate chamber pressure. Glad to hear you are having simiar results

I can get almost identical performance W/Vv-N550 compared to RL-7 in my 8x57 but in that case I reach predicted Mv W/2 grs less than predicted when using Vv-N550. QL seems to be a bit pessimistic W/Vv-N550 while it is overly enthusiastic W/RL-17.

As far as COAL & differing bullets, I am referring to the actual COAL of the particular bullet loaded. That does have a significant bearing on results. You need BOTH. I do not use recommended COAL from manuals. I use whatever length needed to get the bullet just off the lands as long as my magazine will accommodate the necessary COAL to do so.

I'm loading my 8X57 to a bit over 2700fps W200gr Speer Hotcores & RL-17 @ 3.125" COAL. (my8X57 barrel has a short throat)

Yes, I use RL-17 and QL similar way. I use this 8x57IS load:

3.5g (54gr) RL-17
Norma Oryx 196gr bullet
RWS brass
COAL: 77mm (3.031")
Velocity from vz.24 rifle: ~ 790 m/s ~2592 fps
Primer: Federal GM215M

Your results are very similar to mine.

55.5gr RL-17
Speer Hotcore 200gr bullet
Cases formed from once fire Lake City 30-06 GI Brass
Mv 2730 fps
Coal: 3.125"

Action is commercial Yugoslavian Inytermediate length VZ500 with an exceptional M98K take off barrel W/a short throat.

I have found that RL-17 will duplicate Vv-N550 with 2 addition grains of RL-17 in my 8X57 & 1 more grain of RL-17 in a Savage AXIS-II 7mm-08 W/140gr Nosler Ballistic tips.
