Hi All! I don't get to post but try to read the post when time allows. I respect all the knowledge that is here. I have a question regarding sr4759. Has anyone any comments or suggestions if it useful in handgun loads like 44mag or 454? I see in the IMR book it shows it can be used in handgun calibers but not much is listed. Would it be useful in those calibers in lever action rifles?

If you have the IMR book the reduced loads are listed in it under the specific caliber. They aren't always logically arranged.

I've used this propellant quite a bit but never in pistol cartridges. It may be way too slow for most pistols, inlucing the Casull. They make SR4756 specifically for pistols. If IMR doesn't list it for the 44, it's likely not recommended for that reason. I wouldn't use it.

4759 is usually used for light cast bullet loads in rifle calibers. In a rifle, it is a relatively fast burning powder.

BBA,
Yep, I use it in the 357, 44, and 445SM handgun cartridges. Also in the 223, 30-30 and 7-30 in the T/C Super 14" Contender. Accuracy is good with all of them. Velocities are not great in the straight-walled cases, but it is one of the most accurate cast bullet propellents I have found for them. I purchased a surplus keg of it 'bout a year ago--now I wished I had purchased a half-dozen kegs of it...It works well in many cartridges, especially with cast bullets...BCB

I was wondering if it was worth trying. I noticed on the burn rate charts it falls between H110/W296 and H4227 and thought it might have possibilities in magnum calibers. I'm not looking for top velocities all the time but the reason I was interested is one of the local shops are clearancing it out for less than half off. I was hoping to do some more cost effective shooting without damage to a firearm.

BBA,
At that clearence price of 1/2 off--buy it--all you can afford!!! It is a very usable powder. I looked at my data that I have compiled on a spreadsheet and I filtered for SR-4749 powder. It listed a dozen or so loads with various cartridges that were very accurate. It is my choice in the 357 Magnum handgun using a 165 grain Keith-style cast bullet. H-110/296 will give better velocity, but I have always had better accuracy with the SR-4759. Good-luck...BCB

BCB,
Thanks for your reply. I did find (1) listing for 44mag @ 20grns w/ 240grn jacketed although I use mostly my own cast slugs. I was thinking about reducing that by 20% and working up from there.
Would you mind sharing any of your data on the calibers that you load? My sons and I currently load for 38/357, 44spl/mag, 45acp, 45colt, 454casull, 308, 303, 6.5x55mm. We also cast our own for each, when time permits. Any help would be appreciated.
