"It seems very difficult to impress most reloaders with the fact that every rifle is an individual, and what proves to be a maximum load in one may be quite mild in another, and vice versa." Bob Hagel, GAME LOADS AND PRACTICAL BALLISTICS FOR THE AMERICAN HUNTER, 1977

Sorry! This is a statement by a very knowledgeable shooter that I never get tired of quoting.....

"Speer 8" makes the point that 7mm mags are more individual than other calibers, and so reduced the loads, in an otherwise hot manual.

The hottest I have seen in any data sources was from 60.8-64 grains of Vn-165 pushing a 160 Sierra out of a 7mm RM. I think you are right, it must have been a typo.

You should contact them via email and ask them about the problem. As someone else stated, they are very good about replying to your questions. I emailed them awhile back about not being able to find their powder in my area and they took the names and numbers of the local gun shops.

Good Luck!

Gonna load up some 7mm Rem Mag with VV165 and some 160gr Sierra bullets. So I went to the Vihta Vouri website for their latest info .... and see where their charges were heading... It seems that they musta made an error.. The charges seem awful hot!!! Most manuals recommend a max of 61-64 grains of N165... VV is saying 73.4 grs is a max load!!! That seems a trifle on the high side to me...

Ask them. I swapped emails with their US distributor a while back about loads for my .280. They were really good to deal with on that...

Don Golembieski [dgolembi@cox.net]

is the guy I got an email from. Since he is still listed at that email at their website, I feel comfoortable listing his email here. Let us know here if it is a typo. FWIW, stevespages.com has 64 listed as max too with VN165, and I have cross checked a lot of his data and found it to be reasonable. Good luck!

I've got no experience with VV powders yet but I noticed the starting load was 54.2 grains. That seems like a larger spread than most and you may not get all the way up but it does not seem totally unreasonable. It could be a typo though, the maximum charge for the 7mm Weatherby Magnum was a bit less. You weren't planning on starting there were you? I put more faith in the starting loads than the maximum.

VitaVouri Oy data has been getting more conservative. My suspicion is that it is due to the changeover in the CIP standards in earlier manuals to SAAMI in the later ones.

The following manuals and booklets list the following max loads for 7mm Remington magnum:

Reloading Manual 2nd Edition....160gr Grand Slam, N165 60.7gr @ 52200psi
Reloading Guide 1-96......160gr Grand Slam N165 60.7gr
Reloading Guide 1-00.......160gr Grand Slam N165 60.7gr
Reloading Guide 1-00.......160gr Sierra N165 60.8gr

I Seem to remember the 1st Edition manual as being the one with some hotter loads but of course I can't find the damn thing now. The later manuals seem slow on velocity and low pressure. Remember that velocity is a pressure sign. Hope this helped...........DJ
