Hi, both my sons have Rem BDL 270s (my youngest son has my old one a 60s vintage I bought new), my oldest son has his grandfathers left handed model I also bought new in the 80s. Since I've been loading for them I tamed down my load a bit and now have to full length resize. I'm getting 2910 fps out of both rifles with Rem brass, Federal 215 primers and 57g H4831 (please work up to all loads slowly checking for signs of pressure this load is over max in some reloading manuals). I clocked some Federal Vital Shock factory loads with 150g Partitions out of the same rifles that were only getting 2650 fps, pretty anemic.

Accuracy is about .75 inch 3 shot groups out of the left handed one and .5 inch 3 shot groups of the right handed one. My own load for the right handed BDL chrono'd at 3050 fps and I used that load in that rifle for more than 30 years. It shot .5" 3 shot groups at 100 yards as well.

What loads do you 270 shooters use for elk?

Regards,

Chuck

Just take those Noslers and go slay an Elk. I can't see where you're going to do any better with another bullet/powder combination. Remember - If it ain't broke don't fix it. tu2

My dad uses the fancy factory 130 gr Remington Core-Lokts in his 270 for elk. He's used it since the 80s when I remember him going to Colorado every year to hunt. I couldn't tell you how many elk he's killed with that combination.

I loaded a pile of 160 partitions in .270 Winchester for a friend in New Mexico.....he is now a believer.

I also used a 160 partition in a .280 Remington that was used for a one-shot 250 yard elk kill.....

Yes, Ted... a 27 for elk. I took a 5 X 5 with my .270 BDL in the fall of 1997, and although the bullet came apart inside, the bull only went about 100 yards or so. In fact, my buddy watched him topple...

A Partition should eliminate the issue I had with the Grand Slam not exiting. Load those Partitions and go get him!

My son killed his first cow elk with a 130g Core Lokt. I've killed 20 plus elk with that 270 over 30 plus years shooting 150g Partitions. None of the elk had read hunting magazines telling them it wasn't enough gun ... Smiler

My Dad runs 150gr Partitions in front of 60gr RE22, he gets 2900+fps with his 22" barrel. Works very well.
Cheers.

I used the 150gr Partition on my first Elk hunt in 1970 up until 1992 when I switched to Barnes.

Never a complaint about the Partition.

Yep, I de-intestinalized him myself, and then we cut him into four big pieces and proceeded to fill the truck bed of a 1996 Ford Ranger with him.

I have photos for the sincere doubters... Big Grin

I don't know WHERE all this BULLKRAP about needing a huge cannon to slay elk came from, except maybe from the need to be hairy-legged and bad.

I reloaded for a 250 savage with a standard load of 100 gr bullets(whatever was on sale or cheap) for a long dead ol' boy and he killed everything he poked a bullet at including elk and moose, usually with one shot.

I don't know how many elk have been downed with a 30-30 Win 94 or some of the older levergun cartridges and cartridges with MUCH less punch than a 270W...can anyone say 44-40 pistol or rifle or black powder...I've taken 2 elk with a .54 cal/230 round ball loping along at 1500 fs muzzle velo and only ~1000fs/~500 ftlbs energy at 100 yds, at between 75 and 125 yds. Compare that with a 270. BOTH were dead when I hit them but still managed to stagger ~30 yd and the ball punched through both scapula's on the one bull at ~125 yds.

I won't say how many deer/elk/antelope I've taken with guns/calibers you wouldn't be caught with when hunting with your buddies, even though they all did the same thing.

I guess the arguments about rifles, calibers, what will work and what won't will never end. Hahahahaha Confused Frowner Big Grin

I'm not a 270 W person, I liked the .284 size better, but I wouldn't think I was under gunned using a 270 to take almost ALL the game animals on all continents.

As is stated time and time again, it's BULLET PLACEMENT and not cartridge size that counts most.

Bang flop happens, but it's more in the collective mind of FORUM'S than any where else.

NO flame or diss intended. Cool Big Grin

Since the internet came along elk are now smarter and refuse to be killed with a standard cartridge or cheap rifle.

Those that have pulled this trick off were lucky

I can tell you where this notion that elk and moose are bullet proof and need cannons came from; rifle and ammo manufacturers selling NEW products and gun magazine writers PAID to sell these NEW products with whatever dreamed up fairytale story they can conjur, people believe them like the gospel.
If the 30-30, 30 Rem, 300Savage and numerous forgotten cartridges bigger and smaller, had no trouble taking these animals 100 years ago, what's changed? The change...........HYPE and MARKETING.
Another myth written by gun mag writers, animals are killed by energy, rubbish, animals are killed by tissue destruction caused by velocity and the expanding bullet. Think about this, a baseball travelling at 100mph hits with about the same ENERGY as a 180gr 30-06 bullet, it does not, however, tear tissue or break the skin. Yes it can break bones, but you get my point.

Food for thought.

Cheers.

Been hit by more baseballs then I care to remember....same energy as 180 grn from a 30-06

Nope!!

100 MPH baseball = 116 ft lbs

2800 fps 180grn = 3133 ft lbs

Yeah...you got that right 416RigbyHunter...I forget about the gun rags, but where did you get that bit about the base ball? That must be one of those "urban legends".

I came up with slightly different numbers using 2250 gr for a baseball's weight and 150 fs - ~101 mph, just to keep the numbers nice and round and using a the Kinetic energy formula - 1/2 m x v squared...2250 gr x 150 fs squared divided by 7000 gr x 32.20 ft squared/sec squared....I came up with ~112.5 ftlbs....give or take a few ftlbs...

The point is we hunters are always being pumped full of "stuff" just to get your dollar or sound bad. Psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists have been saying this for years...a basic hard wired part of the human mind..."do them before they do you"..."keep them in the dark and feed them bullsh**, they're nothing more than mushrooms anyway." and we did it to ourselves.

No you just need said 5 oz ball to be thrown at 803 FPS

Or 547.5 MPH

Said 180 grn bullet @ 2800 FPS is toolng along at 1909 MPH

With a 1 in 10 twist barrel it's running a drop over 210,000 RPM

I could be off.....it's 5:00 am and I haven't had my coffee yet

You and I , Ted, have WAY too much time on our hands mucking around cogitating about theoretical stuff like base balls and pitcher arm rotational velocity etc Wink ...those way far back in prehistory hunter forefathers still killed those huge antlered Irish elk with nothing more than rocks knives and spears.

Wonder if they sat around the campfire munching on Irish Elk and comparing notes on which stone or wood worked best as a knife or spear point/shaft and how to keep from being gored with those huge antlers? Big Grin lol
