I have always FL sized all my loads, but lately I have read this could cause some runout in the brass as the expander ball pulls through the neck of the case, So my question is how does a neck sizer size the brass differently than a FL die, is there no expander ball in a neck die?? also how do you adjust neck tension??

in times when one needs a rifle, he tends to need it very badly.....PHC

There are 3 types of neck sizers.

The regular neck sizer with an expander ball.

The Redding Type S Bushing style.

And the Lee Collet with a mandrel.

Getting rid of the expander ball is one of the best things I ever did. No need to lube the inside of the neck (and then have to clean it out). Less runout.

When you have to push the shoulder back just use the Redding Body Die to Partial Full Length Resize or Full Length Resize as you choose.

Stupid question Woods....you say you get rid of the expander ball....how do you deprime? Your theory regarding the reduction of runout makes good sense, but I am not seeing the whole picture apparently regarding primer removal. could you explain? Thanks!

The first two at least still have a decapping pin. They just don't have a caliber dia expander ball. I have never used the collet with mandrel.

As usual just my $.02

The Lee Collet die has a decapping pin also. It's a great die design, by the way.

IN RCBS and other standard dies, full length and neck sizing, both use an expander ball. What happens when you neck size only, is that the chambers on rifles are not always perfectly centered to the bore. This lets a neck sized case load into the chamber off center of the bore. Most all standard dies will size the neck down more then .010" , way more then needed to work with all makes/brands of brass. This means the expander ball has to open the inside of the neck diameter back up to the near bullet diameter. In most rifles, the expander ball is .0015" to .002" smaller than bullet diameter. This is where runout occures, sizing the neck down to much, then opening the neck up to the correct diameter. If you want full control of your neck tension, you would buy a Redding type S full length sizing Bushing die. This die has the choice of using an expander ball, or just a decaping pin. For most hunting rifles, full length sizing in standard dies works just fine.

I use a Universal Decapper die. It fits all calibers and I just install it and decap all my fired cases in every caliber at one time. I prefer not to have the jolt of depriming going on when I am using a neck die. You need to feel whats going on while it's happening.

Custom fitted standard FL sizing dies can be had from both Redding and RCBS, maybe others (i think they still do it). They will want 3 fired brass from your gun. The die is then made to match your chamber. Redding will also do this with there Full Length sizing type S bushing dies, for an extra custom fee. This helps to not over work the brass.
