http://www.remington.com/produ...00/model_700_vtr.asp How to you like the triangular shaped barrel? 150 gr BTSP Hornady #3033 moly,.308 LC or WW brass, 44.9 gr fast batch of 4895 2.995"

This is from my "down and dirty" hog rifle. It is an old cobbled together Spanish mauser with an 18" military barrel, Bold Optima trigger and a Burris Fullfield 2x7 scope with the ballistic plex reticule. It is a light, fast rifle designed for night time hog shooting and close work in cover. While these loads are not H4895, they are IMR-4895 which is similiar. There was some wind running the day I shot this confirmation OCW test, so there is some "weather report" visible in it, but it is a very consistent load in this rifle. Not bug-holes, but for the job this rifle does they are more than adequate.

Here is that little mauser I talking about. Perspective in the picture is skewed, makes it look longer than what it is. It is actually about the same lenght as a 24" barreled Encore, which is pretty short.

What kind of wood is that? roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

Curly maple. It's really beautiful wood, but the previous owner really botched the inletting up top and the fit around the barrel channel isn't good. It is filled with bedding compound (full length bedded), but you can see the squiggley line where I have patched it. It's not too awful bad, but enough to really bother a perfectionist. It is about time for a good sand down and refinish, the tung oil just isn't holding up to the abuse this rig sees. Still have a few pieces left to blue also.

With Winchester brass: 45.5 grains of H-4895 and a 150 grain bullet. 43 grains with a conventional 165 grain bullet. H-4895 is a superb powder in the .308 Winchester. There are probably 11 more powders that this can also be said in the .308.

i have always stuck to 42 grs of the 4895. it has worked in the win-100 the m-14 and the ruger. it gets the job done with 150-165 grain bullets. right around 2700 fps. if the temps are going to be around 0* or less i throw a mag primer in them.

I'm thinking of getting the vtr....is it accurate?? BTW...the twist according to remingtons website is 1:12. I'm liking the ported barrel thinking seeing hits on a rocky berm at our range could be fun.

Kranky you are right on my mistake the vtr in 308 does have a 1 in 12 twist. so far I only have about 40 rounds down her, but she is showing promise. the trigger was heavy when I shot it but I have tuned it down now. I think this will help my groups so far I have only tried the 150 grain core-lok factory whammo and I get three touching and two about an inch away from the three touching. the rifle is well balanced the trigger has no creep and breaks like glass, and after you scope one you more or less forget the barrel shape. will keep everyone posted on this rifle Hoggunner

Try this: Sierra 168 Hollow Point over 42.0 gr. H4895. Federal Match brass, Federal 210M primer. 5 shot average of 2,641 fps and 0.417" @ 100m. This was fired from a Rem 700 w/ 23.5" barrel THIS LOAD IS SAFE IN MY RIFLE BUT MAY NOT BE IN YOURS. USE CAUTION AND START POWDER LOADS 10% BELOW THIS LEVEL AND WORK UP.
