Kinda combined from the Wildcat forum beings it is staying in 8x57.

Went and picked up the Rem Classic 8x57 today. What a nice rifle. Suprisingly light. First Remington 700 I've owned. IMO the only thing that would complete it would be iron sights.

Yea it is staying the way it is. Cant wait work up loads in a modern action.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Switching gears to working 8x57 loads up in this modern Remington rifle.

When I did load for the 8x57, which was awhile ago, it was in a fairly good sporterized '43 M98k (23.5"). I dont have any of that data anymore. Powders I remember that I used was IMR4064, 4320, 4895, BLC-2. I cant remember if I used IMR 4350 in any loads of 185 grain or heavier bullets. A search through 42 pages on this site , on reloading the 8x57, I have gleaned that pretty much stands. I never used varget, IMR 3031 or IMR 4198. Any more recomendations?

I still have 1 box 150 and 1 box 220 Hornadys, 2 boxes 175 Sierra, 2 boxes 200 Speer, 1 box 200 Partitions, 2 boxes 185 Rem CL, and RCBS Dies and 60 or so mixed non-mil brass.

Anyone ever reload using PMC brass? I have 40 of those and 20 Remington.

Bullets I want to work-up; 195 Hornady, 196 and 250 Woodleighs, and the 196 Norma Vulkan. The 200 grain Accubond looks interesting.

I prefer the heavier bullets over the 150's. Light bullets just dont float my boat really in any caliber that I have reloaded for.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Anyone seen the CFE data at hogden for the 8x57?
150 GR. HDY SP Hodgdon CFE 223 .323" 2.950" 57.0 3054 46,900 CUP

175 GR. SIE SP Hodgdon CFE 223 .323" 3.100" 55.0 2837 47,800 CUP

180 GR. NOS BT Hodgdon CFE 223 .323" 3.020" 52.0 2758 47,500 CUP

I wonder if this data was from a 29" test barrel.

fishingWith one of my short barreled scouts the velocity for a 185 grain bullet was right at 2500 fps. driven by 47.5 grains of Accurate 2520. Repeatability was close to or better than 1 MOA. oldShould be good for anything in the lower 48 +. beerroger

Ramshot TAC and Big Game have good application in the 8x57 too. Data online.

IMR 4320 is hard to beat in the std 8x57. RL17 would be worth trying with 185-200 gr bullets also.

My best chrony results with the 8X57 were from IMR 4064. By a good margin.. Accuracy was all comparable (except eith BT's which was excellent). Trying to remember, I think I also tried 4350, Rlr 19 and blc2 among others.

I'm sure that's true, but what frame of reference do you have to tell you that you were achieving pressures from the other loads which were reasonably equal to those generated by IMR-4064?

For the Rem 185's I use AA2460.

For 200's a MAX load of 4350 w/ bullets seated out as far as the chamber and/or magazine will allow.

8x57 is one of the cartridges that seem to work with just about any combination of components. Any powder in the 4320,4350,4895 burn rate range seems to work with any bullet in the 160-220gr range. Just put together a few different combinations and see what your rifle prefers. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a tackdriver with a number of different loads.

Has anyone used BL-C(2) or W748 to good effect with 185 and heavier bullets?

i got one of those classics also.
it don't care what combo i use in it either. powder type or bullet weight it is a 1-1/2" gun.
it shoots the first shot in the group with the other ones though.
and its consistent the groups can be 3 or 10 shots it's still 1-1/2"s.
i have gotten it to shoot regular groups in the 3/4" size with cast boolits from a one cavity old 32 win special flat pont mold though.

Well, started doing some fiddling with the 8x57 Rem. I'm going to work up the 200 grain Speer first. Lighter weight are going to wait until Hodgdon's CFE 223 comes out in Jan 2012.

The 8x57's is the set to the right. I was surprised that the Remington didnt have a long throat.

The first 8x57 sizing round was from my old M98 that is now chambered in the 358 Norma. It's a 200 grain partition seated to the base of the neck. OAL was 3.155 (just for comparison to the others).

2nd 8x57 is a 200 grain part in the Rem for 3.10.

3rd is 200 grain speer in Rem for 3.07

4th is 185 Rem CL in the Rem for 3.01

These are my beginning cartridge lengths for working up the loads in those bullets.

The 6.5x55 off to the left are from the CZ550 American I picked up a couple weeks ago too.
That thing has what appears to be a long ass throat. The 2nd round from the left was max for the 140 grain remington cl's (just kissing the rifling @ 3.21. The one to the left is what Ill start with when working up loads @ 3.02.

I'm going to p/u some RL 15. But, I'm going to hold off with working up serious loads with 185 grains and lighter. I'm waiting on CFE 223 to come out in Jan. On the hodgden site they have some 8x57 loads that make me go... Eeker

Well loaded up some;
150 Hor SP
PMC case
48 grains H4895
WLR primer

Shot them over the chrony with no accuracy taken. Avg was 2767 fps.

I'll load the rest of the PMC cases with this bullet for shits and giggles, along with the 200 grain Speer test loads. Wont be able to get to the range for a couple of weeks to get a picture of their accuracy.

First rounds I've reloaded in seven years. dancing

I had really good luck with Nosler's 200gr Accubond and Varget in a very old 8x57 rifle. YMMV but if I wanted a good load with a better than average hunting bullet I'd give it a try. Big Grin

PaulH,

Just saw this thread today. Can help with some of questions:

1) I like the heavier bullets, too.

2) Did my work-up loads using Varget, IMR-3031, IMR-4064, IMR-4320, IMR-4350, and IMR-4895. My rifle likes IMR-4064 the best with 185 gr bullets and IMR-4895 the best with 200 bullets. So I'd recommend both of those 2 powders. I've not needed any others for my 8x57.

3) Yes, I've used PMC brass in my 270 Winchester and it was very good brass! Both accurate and lasted reloading 8 times.

4) Just a word of caution - I reloaded for many different caliber many years, The 8x57 has the biggest brand to brand variation in case capacity of any cartridge I've run across!

Made it to the range today with the 8x57 and 7x57. Both modern actions.

Temp:38-40 (Flipin froze my ass-off.)
Wind:0
Bench Rest was marginal

Remington M700 8x57 24" bbl w/ factory trigger. Timmeny trigger is on the way.

200gr Parts, Ramshot Big Game, OAL 3.10, WLR Primer, Win case. Velocity is average.
Loads started at 48.5(2350fps) to 50.5(2440fps).
Best accuracy was with 49gr (2385fps) at around 1.5". Didnt like Big Game.

200gr Parts, IMR4350, WLR Primer, OAL 3.10, Win case.
Loads started at 49gr(2265fps) to 53gr(2470fps).
Best accuracy was with 51gr(2360fps) 51.5gr(2390fps) both came in under an inch. 52-53gr loads were pretty good too.

I also tested the 150gr Hornady's over 48grs H4895. Avg velocity(2690fps) in the summer they clocked avg of 2767fps. An eight shot group went 2.1". Not bad for a dump load.

Prvi 8x57 factory 196gr. 2162, 2157, 2096....WTF

The Ruger M77(TS) 7x57mm 22" bbl
IMR4350, 150gr Winchester Power Points, Win LR primer, Rem Cases.

47gr: 2544, 2543, 2510*. The casing on the asterick shot came out with a split neck and a dent in the shoulder. Puzzled me because 12 federal factory rounds were fired an hour prior with no issues to the cases. All other reload shots didnt have this issue either. Two shot Grp .45" with flyer 2.13"

48gr: 2604, 2619, 2614. Two shot Grp .17" nearly same holed. w/ flyer .97"

49gr: 2645, 2667, 2624. Grp 1.45"

50gr: 2656, 2682, 2682. Two shot Grp .30". w/ flyer 1.52"

A three shot group from Federal factory Speer 140's clocked 2343, 2364, 2380. Grp .85"

See if you can snag a set of Forster dies with the Benchrest Seater off of Ebay. Pick up some of the Sierra 8mm 200 grain Match Kings and get a load recommendation for best accuracy from Sierra. Use these bullets to shoot little groups while you season the bore for future fun.

You will also find that the 185 grain Sierra Spitzer and the 170 Hornady RN will both produce spectacular accuracy.

I had some custom loaded ammo from Superior Ammo in 200 grain bullets. Barnes TSX and Swift A-Frame wouldnt group. Woodleigh 1". Accubonds .25-.5".

I'm out now, so am going to try and replicate the load myself. Going to try IMR 4064 and 4350. Going to replicate the OAL of the Superior Ammo.

Unsure if you mean 175gr Sierra or the 185gr Rem CL. I love the 175gr Sierra. The 175gr is next on the bench w/ H4895 and CFE223. Picked up some 170gr Hornady's last week too. I'll be looking for an easily achievable load @2600-2650 or so with 4064 and 170 RN's.

I used IMR4064 for a couple of loads in a sporterized mauser rifle. I lost the records and cant remember them. It didnt stay 8x57 for long and was reamed to a 8mm-06. I had two very good IMR 4064 loadings with the 175gr Sierra and 200gr Parts. So, I know that powder will work. I dont know why I've bypassed IMR 4064.

I havent loaded the Accubomb beings I have three full boxes of Parts. Along with the 175's above, the next range trip will be working on narrowing down the IMR4350 loads and testing 200 Parts w/Imr4064.

On a side note the trigger on my M700 isn't that bad as I was reading on the net. Not great, however, I do have a timmeny on the way. It was just cold and the rest was not as good as I would have liked.

Well the Prvi ammo is rated at Muzzle Velocity: 2181 fps, Muzzle Energy: 2072 ft. lbs. So that Remington is on the money with that. I thought it was rated @2500.

Any quality brass will work fine.
Hodgden Website has many good loads for 8X57.

http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

As the Remington Classic is (I think) only a 22" bbl, you'll want to chrongraph your loads.

It will kill anything as dead as a 30-06 or 35 Whelen, and with your super strong modern action you can probably "push the envelope" a bit.

If you intend to keep it, I suggest glass bedding the recoil lug (only contact on back) and the tang as Classic wood was really nothing special in terms of compression strength.

I still have some Persian 197 gr spire point boat tailed machine gun loads. With the Persian 98's long barrel you could really reach w-a-y out.

Good score for you !

It's a 24" tube. The timmeny trigger came in a went on. Easy straight forward instal. Way better than the stock one.

OK, 8x57 guru's

I have all the spec hammered out with mcgowan for the 8x57 22" tube going on an m70 action I have.

I have to decide how I want it throated. My leaning is for a 200gr Partion at 3.10. That puts it at the base of the neck.

Suggestions??

I'll throw two range trips in.

6/19/13
Range trip last week;
CFE223 and the 175 gr Sierras were looking real good overall. Best groups were 55gr. Still wasnt showing any pressure sign. Average velocity was 2800 fps. H4895 real good too. Problem is I'm running out of it.

For some reason I havent found the sweet spot with this Remington and the 200gr Nosler pills. Big Game, IMR 4530 were a bust. IMR 4064 shows promise, but 46gr only averaged 2500 fps.

The star of that day was the 185gr Core lokt and H4895 and pretty much all loads tested. Go figure. Best groups were under an inch, with avg velocity of 2660fps. H380 and the 185's did OK about an 1.5" avg and 2580fps.

Next trip will be working with;
-180 Nosler's with CFE223 and IMR 4007
-More with CFE/175gr Sierras and H4895/185gr

Rifle is a Rem700, Alaska TI stock, Tim Trigger, 24" barrel.

7/3/13
What a crappy day at the range. Could not get comfortable on the rest. The Hornady 195 grainers didnt come in time. Couldnt run any loads with them.

175 Sierra/CFE223: (avg vel 2810), First three shots 1.1" then went to crap from there.

185 Core Lokt/H4895: (avg vel 2608), First two shots touching went to crap from there. Later shot a four shot string, first three 1.1" and the fourth flew high.

180 Nos BT/CFE223:
50gr (avg 2698) 1.5" group. Not bad will purse this.
CFE was pushing those 180 Noslers. At 52grs they averaged 2780fps. I would consider that a near max or as far as I wish to go with that combo.

175 Sierra/IMR4007: 53gr (avg 2597) 1.0", 54gr (avg 2670) 1.3". I'll play around with these more.

This rifle continues to dislike 200 grainers. 200 grain bullet loads today; IMR4007/ 200 Speer , IMR4350/200 Nosler AB, H414/ 200 Speer all poop. The only marginal one was the IMR4007/200 Speer (avg 2510) printed at 1.3", so I'll twiddle with that one.

There was some success. The 7x64 RL17/160 Speers (avg 2881) .45" group. This was shot with a borrowed bipod.

Not a bad day overall. Still cant dial in the 180/CFE loads. Velocity is there, but not exceptable accuracy. I will drop down to 49.0 and 49.5 grains and see what that produces.

Next trip will be the lightweight 150's from Hornady and Sierra. The Barnes 160's. I'll give CFE,AA2495, Big game, and N202 a shot with them.
