Factory Blems?

Midway has factory blems, 195-grain, 8mm (.323)bullets on sale for 25 bucks per 100 right now. They don't say what brand they are (assume they are Hornady, since they make a 195-grain, cannelured, spire point), but they claim they were most likely rejected because of discoloration in the copper jacket.

Anybody ever shot these or other blems? How do they fly? I could care less how they look if they fly good. Also, would the cannelure be in the right place for the 7.92x57 JS (8mm mauser)?

Just curious.

I've shot Nosler 2nd's with great success-couldn't even tell what was wrong with them. $25/100 seems a bit pricey though.

I've bought Midway's blems and, in my opinion they're Hornadys though Midway won't tell you that. The blems I bought shot just as well as the higher priced stuff and I wish I'd bought more.

Comparing the Manufacturer numbers on the web page for the blemished bullets and the regular Hornady bullets (3236B vs. 3236), it is a good bet the blemished bullets are Hornady

I bought a ton of blem 400gr .416 several years ago because they were priced very right.
They were considered blems because the cannelure was not in the correct place. It was too close to the base causing your round to be too long if you crimped in the cannelure.

I seat them where I want them for my 416 Rem and 416 Rigby and have never had a problem -and they shoot great.

I'm about 99.9% sure they are Hornady bullets.

Most Hornady bullets discolor after 20 years or more. I don't think they do a perfect job of removing the swaging lubricant. Anyway I have tens of thousands of boxed Hornadys that I have bought over the last 30 years with discolored jackets. At least one box has turned nearly jet black. They all shoot fine.

If the discoloration bothers anyone, you can put them in a plastic bucket with a 50/50 mix of hot water and vinegar with a tablespoon of salt. Swish them around for a couple of minutes and rinse with fresh water. They'll be bright and shiny as new.

If these bullets are truly "blemished" then they would have been polished at the factory and sold as standard product.....you can bet your bottom dollar there is something about them that did not meet specs or are merely a serious overrun and inventory reduction.....in any case they are still well worthy of your dollar!

I bought some of the "Midway" blems in .308" and .366". The .308s are 178gr polymer tips and some of the points are not fully seated, they'll work fine in the rifle I intend on shooting them in.

The .366 bullets are the same as Hornady bullets, the one box I've opened so far had one bullet with a rumpled jacket and one where the core didn't come to the end of the jacket. Looked like a match hollow point Smiler Then for grins I counted the bullets in the box and found it to contain 51 instead of 50. I've shot 10 so far and they made a nice group from my 9.3x62 and will work just fine as practice bullets for next years safari.

I've also bought Nosler partition blems in the past and couldn't tell the difference from "firsts". Big Grin
