Are rimmed cases as strong as rimless ?
I have a P14 Enfield action that I have been undecided as to what to do with, I want to keep it as a rimmed action and not go to the belted case, as it will only ever be used here in Australia I don't need an elephant gun and I would like to keep it in a heavy calibre that I already have, i.e. 358 or 375.
Can anyone suggest a rimmed cartridge or commonly available rimmed case that I could use to get the maximum out of this action ?
I was thinking along the lines of a shortened 9.3x74R case necked to 358 or 375.
Any ideas ??

Since the P14 was chambered for the 303, the simplest thing to do would be chambering for something like the 35 Epps or 375 Epps (35/303 and 375/303 wildcats) but if you do not want a 375 H&H another belted magnum to consider is the 300 H&H but I get your point about what you want to do here.

I would just neck up the 303 to .358, 9,3, or .375 depending on what bullets you want to use.

Baised on my use of the 9,3x74R double, if you can get @2450 to 2550 with a 303/9,3 with a 270 Speer, or @2250 with a 285 Woodleigh Soft, and/or Solid, then you will have a rifle that can take any Aussie game for sure.

I'd be more adventurous ... my 'smith told me it'd be as ugly as sin but would indeed work.

Extend the magazine box to H&H length, but keep the slant ... then chamber to 400/350NE with a fresh 35cal barrel. The 303British and 400/350NE are near identical except for length. Would feed smooth as silk and give you 35Whelen speeds if you decided to push it some. Bertram has brass.
Cheers...

It seems rimmed cases just stretch mor ethan bottlenecked. The headspacing on the rim is the problem. I shoot a 338x74K based on the 9.3x75R & the cases stretch quite a bit, even using partial FL sizing. Brand of brass also matters. The RWS 9.3 is quite a bit thicker in the head area so it does resist head sep better. I would think 303 brass has sim issues.

.....just a thought......375 x 2 1/2" NE, the Lee Speed calibre, what sort of power could you expect to get out of it in a strong action ?? Similar to the400/350NE ??
