My hornet is a cz 527 with a leupold VariX11 3-9x50. My load is 11 grains of Win 296 in a rem case behind the sierra 45 grains soft point, I use rem 7 1/2 primers and overall length is 1.71. This is a great little round however it took me a while to find the right load, it would not shoot with winchester primers.

Enrico,

I have done quite a bit of load development for the K-Hornet. This is what you would call an "improved" version of the Hornet. It has a straight body with a sharp shoulder and a neck that is about a quarter inch long. It has possibly a couple grains more powder capacity than the standard Hornet. The gun I have in this chambering is an 18" Contender carbine. I did exterience some difficulty in getting a good load, as the hornet sized cartridge is a bit fickle.

One of the biggest problems with the hornet is that if you use too strong a primer, the primer will actually blow the bullet out of the cartridge before it gets a fire started in the powder. The bullet then goes into the barrel, stops and waits until the powder begins to burn, then gets blown out the muzzle.

The solution I found was to do everything I could the slow down the departure of the bullet. That is, first, use a small pistol primer. Second use a fast powder - I use Alliant 2400. Third, set the bullet to touch the rifling (if it will reach the rifling).

My load is: CCI small pistol primer, 11.5 grains Alliant 2400, Nosler 40 grain Ballistic Tip bullet set to touch the rifling. I get 2700 f/s and it will now shoot 1/2" 5-shot groups. It is also deadly on the Prairie Dogs of southern Wyoming.

With the standard hornet, you will probably fill the case with about 10 grains of 2400, but so long as your gun is a modern one that full case should not be a problem.

Good shooting,

Don Shearer

Enrico i have two 22 hornets and they are my favorits because they are cheepe to to shoot and they are a great way to get the kids started.loading wise they can be a little finicky but if you do not push them they are a good choice.
i load most of them with WW 680 but it is discontinued i think i have abuot a ponnd and a half left whitch will last me a while.
my dies are RCBS and work well.as far as bullets go i use bulk bulets from Remington
45 gr and 50 grs.just a plain enjoyable gun to shoot.good luck and good shooting

I shoot a Ruger 77/22VHZ, and have a CZ 527 on order. I can't imagine life without a .22 Hornet! Lots of fun to shoot, mild report, no recoil.
I use Winchester brass and Federal #100 small pistol primers. I've found Hodgdon's Lil'Gun to be the best powder for me, after trying H4227, H110, IMR4227 W296, and AA1680. I've also tried all the different flavors of small rifle & small pistol primers. I like about 13.1 grains of Lil'Gun.
My Ruger likes Hornady 40 grain V-Maxes, Berger 22/40MEF's, and Starke 40 grain HPFB varmint bullets. I seat them .020" off the rifling lands. I use RCBS Competition dies. I sort my brass by weight, +/- 0.1 grains. I've tried sorting by rim thickness, too, but didn't see any noticable accuracy improvement. At 100 yards, my Ruger will put 5 shots inside an inch, most groups 3/4" or less.
Regards, George.

I shoot a Ruger #3 Hornet. I use 4227 and the Sierra 45 grain hornet bullet. I use 11.5 grains seated out as far as possible. Long throated this one. It gives me (if I do my part) 1/2 to 3/4". It seems to be very bullet particular.
