I looks like the 25 Ackely is a belted mag case 2.45" long. I'd say it's 5-10% smaller than the 257 Wby. Start with 257 Wby loads reduced another 10% and work up. I don't think I'd trust loading data from 1956 for a wildcat, plus you've got all the newer, slow buring powders to use nowadays.

Same thoughts I been having, but just wanted to see what the old book showed. Speer was generally pretty "hot" in those days. Had the rifle for near 20 years and never did much with it.

AfricanHunter: I've got a Speer Manual #5 which has data for the .25 Ackley. The data is is rather extensive, so which bullet weight and powders are you interested in?

For example, the 100 grain bullet with 4831 is listed at 61, 63, and 65 grains for 3166, 3266, and 3351 FPS respectively. The 120 shows the same powder at 58, 60, and 62 grains for 3037, 3120, and 3235 respectively.

Powders include H5010 & H570, plus the entire line of IMR's 4064 through 4350 and Hi-Vel No. 2. Incidentally, if you take a shine to using a 60 grain Speer, you can launch it at 4202 FPS with a 63 grain charge of 4064.

Many years ago a good friend of mine had a .25-284 wildcat, which is not too much less in case capacity to the .25 Ackley. The rifle had a barrel just short of 27" and we got a chronograph reading of 4264 fps with a little 60 grain OPE Winchester bullet designed for the .256 Winchester. Stepping the powder up a half grain from that vaporized the bullet and all we got were pock marks in the paper screens of our Oehler Model 10.

Stonecreek,
Thanks for info. If you could do the same with 4350, then I would have more to go on than I have now. Ammo that came with the rifle years ago were 100 gr Hornady with 60 grains of 4350, but not marked as to IMR or "H". Load Data has lots of info, copied from Speer, I think< but it costs $29.95 to get it.

If the ammunition is "years old", then the powder would be the IMR version since H4350 is of relatively new advent.

Here is what the Speer Manual has on 4350 (24" barrel and Winchester cases of unspecified original caliber, Rem 9 1/2 primers, twist 1-10")

100 grain Speer
56 - 3260
58 - 3322
60 - 3368

120 grain Speer
52 - 2941
54 - 3054
56 - 3117
