Just put together my .338 and am wondering about some of your favorite loads. I would like to use the Nosler 225 grain partition for Elk but am open to the 250. Any help? [Confused]

I just got back from an elk hunt with a 338. I had good luck with 210gr. barnes XLC's and H-414. Velocity of 3004fps and <1MOA accuracy in my sako. End to end penetration on a 4 point bull.

I load for a buddies .338 Win and have used the 225 NP's with 71.0 of Reloader 19 and Fed 215 primers. This is a -3 or -4 grain from max load that yielded about 2750 fps in his rifle.
He isn't interested in max velocity just a shootable, accurate load for medium range elk.

My .338-06 shooting 225 NP's at a mere 2600 fps has taken elk handily with all sorts of penetration. Unless all your shooting is at long ranges one just doesn't need 3000 fps to do the job. IMHO anyway.

OOP's!!! 71 grains NOT 75 as previously stated....

I use 73.0 gr of RE19 and get excellent accuracy with the 225NP's. Note that Nosler lists 72.5 gr of RE19 as the MAX load for 225's.

I use 73 grains of RL-19 behind a 230-grain FS bullet. This is a little OVER the MAXIMUM recommended by Winchester, but it works fine with my .338WM.

For safety reasons, always start at least 10% below the maximum powder charges listed here.

Also, for more reloading information, look at the "Reloading Pages" right here in this Web site.

I have several 338 Win Mags and have worked on a few more. All but one have been very accurate and prefer 75-76g of RL22 using the 225 Noslers. I have only one, my favorite, which shoots those bullets with N160, about 74-75g. It doesn't do badly with RL22 either. In all cases I use Fed 210M primers.

I have used a 225 grain hornady this weekend on a Kudu bull and it performed very well a 225 grain should perform even better

Interestingly enough, I have tried 73 grs of RL19 and it didn't do me any good. I went back to the bench on Saturday and loaded up some 250 Sierras and 250 Noslers. Guess what? It loved the Noslers (3/4") and the Sierras almost as well. Go figger! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I use the Nosler 210 Partition behind 72 gr of IMR 4350. This gives me 3050 fps from my Browning A-Bolt with 26" barrel. I killed a 7x6 bull elk that my guide estimated at over a thousand pounds. He said it was the largest Arizona bull he'd ever seen. The shot was at about 175 yards and literally slammed the elk to the ground sideways !!! This was with a lung shot. Impressive killing power with recoil that's not too bad.BTW, this load groups .75" in my A-Bolt.

Any 225 grainer, 70.5 gr's H4350 for 2,840 fps from a 22" bbl.

Actually, it's hard to pick a .338 bullet that doesn't do well on elk. I've used 200 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips as well as 225 Partitions, both with equal success. I came across some 210 Partitions at an attractive price and will use those on my next opportunity.

I like the slightly lower recoil and flatter trajectory of the lighter bullets, but the 250 at around 2700 fps is no slouch for trajectory, either.

If your rifle is shooting the 250 Partition in 3/4" groups, by all means, go with it.

Stonecreek, I am very interested in the 200gr BT for Elk but haven't talked to anyone who has actually used them. My 338 Model 70 purely loves the things. I use 66.0 gr of IMR4064 and get a velocity of just over 3000fps. I opened up the magazine and altered the bolt stop and ejector so I can seat the bullets just off the lands. Groups immediately closed up and the rifle is extremely accurate eith this load. Can you give any more details about the kind of results you have had with the bullet on Elk?
