Really reduced loads.
That is, is there anyway to get a bullet safely leaving a 300win mag at subsonic velocity?

Thanks for any replies, scoffing, help or general abuse

Carl, with about 7 grains of Green Dot or Blue Dot, or Red Dot, I am sure that a 150 grain bullet would be subsonic.

I have tried small charges in an '06 or 243 case that were subsonic, but did not do much playing with it, because in my world I don't see much application for it.....
except maybe poaching, but I don't participate in that.

However it can be done.

And if you play with downloads that much have a contengency plan when you may have to get a stuck bullet from inside of the barrel out.

Cheers and good shooting

Make sure that you get some lead bullets -- there is a world of difference between removing a stuck jacketed bullet and a stuck lead bullet! Don't ask how I know..

If you work down from 10 grains of Red Dot until your chronograph says that your load is JUST subsonic you will have the least chance of discovering the joys of stuck bullets!

I'll vote for cast bullets here also. I shoot alot of cast out of the 06 for plinking. I use 10gns of 700x with a 165gn. I've also used WC820 and WC680 for reduced plinkers.
from quickload:
300win 165 cast 22" bbl
12gns 2400 1130fps
8gn Unique 1135fps

Try SR-4759. Fun loads to shoot. Check for load data in either the Speer or Lee manuals.

on that topic though, i'm under the impression that a heavier round would maintain velocity for longer, ie towards a 200-220gr

and what (if any) precautions can be made to stop the rifle blowing up?

being a reduced load, is there a risk of overcharging?
what means or precautions can be taken to preserve the rifle?

i have a sako trg42 with a swarovski6-24x50 scope. i group 500mm at 500m, i hate scaring 30 rabbits to get 1, so i'm also curious about the reduced loads. Having spent $10,000 for "out of the box" accuracy, i dont want to end it with 2cents worth of powder.
any hints?

Hey Karl, Somewhere I remember seeing "Chamber Adapters" which allow a 32ACP to be fired in a 300WinMag. Probably in either Rifle or Handloader magazines.

Since the 32ACP 71gr Bullet only gets about 700-800fps in a pistol with 2-2.5gr of Powder, I'm "guessing" it would be fairly quiet in a 24"-26" rifle barrel.
