Sorry, this is not a trick question for spring final exams. As silly as the question seems, I need to know how much one of the DuPont/IMR metal one pound powder cans weights without the powder in it.

This may be the epitome of laziness as I don't want to go through the trouble of empting one to weigh the container without the powder in it. I was hoping one of you may have already gone through the exercise.

Do you have a full can?

Weigh it and subtract exactly one pound - the net weight of the powder inside.

Great idea except that all my cans are in some stage of depletion or when I would have a little left in a can I would combine it with a full can of the same powder thus "topping it off."

Then pour all the powder out of the "depleted" can and weigh it. You can always pour it back.

But I wouldn't mix same kinds of powder unless they came from the same lot.

Not to be argumentative Bill, but mixing small amounts of the same powder from diff. lots has zero affect on your loads. I've been doing it for 25years, what else do you do w/ 120gr of powder, throw it out?

I hate to tell you guys this but the powder companies are not giving us our full pound. About two months ago I took a new can of Benchmark, had never been opened, and put the whole thing on a scale, plastic jug and all. The whole thing didn't weigh but .8 of a pound. Before you say anything this was a certified 100 pound capacity postal scale.

I like to keep them bullet holes all in one hole if possible.

LittleD, put it on a 3-5# scale & see what you get.
Bill, I understand, it's just it doesn't really affect your next lot. I've just never seen any appreciable diff. in accuracy.

I have access to electronic scales for postal applications that are accurate to 1/32 of an ounce. I agree with Little Devil. We do not always get a full pound or 7000 grains of powder in a container.

So I am sure that is what he meant by certified there Vapodog.

As far as pouring powder out of a container and weighing it. I don't know what anyone else does, but when I reload, I pour the powder into an empty plastic 8 ounce yogart container. My 10 yr old eats tons of fruit yogart, so there are plenty of them around the house. I also use a lot of my wife's empty plastic butter containers.
These all have sealable lids on them.

I also have several different sized plastic funnels dedicated to duty on the reload bench.
When I am done loading the powder poured into the yogart container, gets poured back into the factory container, via the funnels.

I don't know about anyone else, but since day one almost I have been using empty Hodgdon containers to put my IMR powder into, and then remarking them with a large shipping label. The Hodgdon containers are more user friendly, but I prefer IMR powder. Now that Hodgdon owns IMR, it will no longer be a problem since they all will come in plastic containers.

I figured I wasn't the only one doin' that. Those Hogdon containers sure are better. I guess since Hogdon has taken over we will being seeing more and more of the IMR powders sold in the Hogdon Containers.
