Have had success in the past with H-4895 in my bolt action 223 Rem and my 204 Ruger but I have not used it in the 22-250. Would like any comments from shooters that tried this powder in their bolt action 22-250's. I have a good supply of H-4895, Win LR primers, and new Win brass to use with 50 gr V-max's. Any load suggestions will be appreciated.

At one time I had a 22-250 and did use quite a bit of H4895 in it. `According to my notes 32.8grs was the load that was the most accurate in my rifle. It worked very well with almost any 50gr bullet, including the V-Max. Rifle was a push feed M70.

either of the 4895 powders are excellent for the "varminter"......see the Hodgdon website for amounts.

The load I have used with H4895 was with 50 grain Remingtion powerlokt bullets. My son's Savage shot .5" at 200 yds. with it, but this load has shot almost this well in a couple other rifles also. It was Win brass and primers and 35.6 grains of H4895. I ran them over a chronograph and was getting a little over 3800 ft/sec.

Must be the local area here... I have had the same luck, but the charge for the most accuracy was 32.5 grains in my experience with a 50, 52, 53 or 55 grain bullet....

I hate H 4895, because it is a finicky powder...

find something accurate in it, and then move the charge up or down a couple of 10ths of a grain and the groups open up like crazy....

but 32.5 grains is the most accurate charge I have found out of H 4895 in a 22.250...

even for a shot out barrel...

my preference is to use IMR's version instead!

Dave, I would like to hear of your experience with H-4895 in the 22-250 in the Browning single shot as well.

FrownerJust had a little eye opener going through my data. Out of 222 different loadings in the 22-250 I never used any 4895. I know I used it back in the 60s but didn't keep good records. My memory says it was OK but had to sacrafice some velocity . Winkroger

if ya got it use it....but when it's gone.....may I suggest ball powders....H-414 and H-380 are mush easier to measure and both work great in the 22-250

4895, in either the IMR or the H- version, is by far my favorite and most successful powder in the .22-250. Whenever this subject comes up I am amazed at the number of shooters who have independently settled on 35.5 grains of 4895 with a 55 grain bullet (this load is safe and sustainable in most guns, but some may do better with a little less). If you prefer 50 grain bullets (although I can argue better for the 55's), you can likely use .5 to 1 grain more powder.

Vapo: While ball powders do meter flawlessly, the short-grained 4895 also meters beautifully itself.
