With a friend we are thinking to made a .222 Rem with a barrel with 1-8 twist to reload the 77 and 80 grains HPBT Sierras Match King for target purposes to have a better bullet for windy days at 300 meters , ( we want to do it in .223 but it's not an option in Spain ), someone have info on this caliber with this bullets weights ?

Thank you

Daniel

Hello Mike

Thank you for your answer , the option on 222 Rem it's we have two available actions a old BRNO fox and Anschtz , and the limit it's on the magazine only accept a 222 Rem cartridges , here in Spain the only forbidden cartidge it's the 223 / 5.56x45 , I made comparations with a ballistic program of the long bullets of .224/80 grains at only 2500 fps and the 6 mm 105 grains at 2900 in the 6 mm Norma BR and the 224 HPBT win on a 2 m/s wind ( 55 mm at 300 meters vs. 81 mm of the 6 mm ) , I Switzerland I shoot the SIG in 5.56 and accuracy was great and I understand the standard bullet it's 77 grains lead core , then I think a bit less of powder less velocity but the idea it's not for hunting , only target and velocity it's not important .
Saludos

Daniel

Dan:

I have a 223 with a one in 8 twist. I can see a 222 on the same program. Although velocity would be less, as you pointed out for target shooting, a little scope adjustment and it solves the problem.

For the actions that you mentioned, the only reservation would be since the 75-80 grain bullets are so long in ratio to case length, you would ever had to make the rifle a single shot or you would have to seat the bullet so deep, I question the application as you would have too much velocity loss in my opinion at that point.

Mine for some reason does not shoot any of the 77 grain bullets very well. I can't figure that out because it loves 75 grain and 80 grain bullets. It just turns its nose up at the 77 grainers and throws them everywhere. Who knows?

Cheers and Good shooting

I believe that .222 has the case volume to make a 80gr bullet useful to 300 m. The increased BC should compensate more than enough for the velocity loss. I think you're on the right track. Slow twist rate is from my point of view the greatest drawback with factory .222. I'd go for a 1:10 or 1:12 though. Very much due to the reasons seafire brought up.

Thank you for the answers , the idea on the Anschtz action it's to be a single loader ; Lothar Walther could provide the Barrel , I'll post the results , here in Spain we lack of 300 meters ranges we mostly shoot at 100 meters with a reduced target, and only the finals will be shooting at real 300 meters , and the only problem it's the wind , the minimum recoil of the 222 Rem , and a excellent BC and SD of the .224 80 grains could have an edge over real big bores like a .308 W.

Gracias

Daniel
