shooting 454 reloads

I was trying out some 454 reloads yesterday and could not get the point of impact low enough. I was shooting a reduced load, 10gns unique 300gn lead bullet CCI magnum primer heavy crimp. The revolver has a 7.5" barrel.

A guy there had the theory that the bullet was traveling too slow, exiting the barrel after the recoil took effect on the point of aim.

My question is do I choose a lighter bullet, a different powder, or work on shooting technique?

Would a 250gn lead bullet work better? These are just practice loads. My 300gn HP / XTP 30gn H110 loads work great.

The info you were given is correct. The barrel time on that load is too long, and the muzzle has a chance to move upward before the bullet departs, making it strike too high for you to be able to lower your rear sight far enough to zero it. The only solution (other than a higher front sight blade) is a lighter bullet, so the gun recoils less by the time the bullet exits the muzzle. If you increase the MV of the present bullet, you will have the same problem, because recoil will increase in proportion to the MV increase, so it will still shoot high!!

Thanks El,
'Bout how many grains of unique should I use with a 250gn lead bullet to avoid this problem?

The rear sight is all the way lowered and I'm 6-8" high at 25 yards.

I bought a used 6" off Gunbroker.com. Had the same problem. Part of it may be that it is made to be used with 270-320 grain bullets at 1700 plus. Called with my sight removed and measured and for $15 ordered a different front blade. Just shot it yesterday. Shot a one hole 4 shot group at 30 with 274 grain Keith cast at 1325 fps. Nice everyday accurate load.

Sorry pard, I did the same shit people do to me and piss me off.......didn't fully comprehend the last line. Still feel a different blade will get you a better working sight for both loads.

I've thought about the taller front blade. I don't need to shoot practice loads that are that heavy, so I'm going to try the 250gns first. Thanks All for the advise.
