(I wonder if Bill Leeper is reading this??)

Anyone ever use this round for long-range shooting?

Any ideas on how it would do in a benchrest-quality rifle? I've wondered about that for a long time.

If no one can convince me otherwise, I'm gonna try it for 1,000yard Benchrest. [Smile]

LDO:

I guess the way I look at the 7.62X54R is it's a .308 Win with a rim and shoots .311 bullets. That's the way I load rounds for my mil surp. I don't know how many long range rifles are chambered in .308. If you're looking for something different, it sounds like you've found the cartridge.

LDO,
It's a middle 30 cal, with a rim. If you get a m91/38 with a tikka barrel (i thinkvelmet, too) it will shoot right with the m36 swedes. As for long range? I've had a couple 91s, and an SVT, and they all shoot great, under 2 inches with iron sights, and with a scope, the svt shoots sub inch.
there is an ackley version of it, that makes it a couple FPS faster than an 06. It's a great round, but you are going to be limited to .311 bullets. I've had great results with 150 and 180gr.

you could have a .308 barrel chambered for x54, just like ruger did with the mini30

I don't know of anyone that has tried one for a LR rifle but see no reason it wouldn't work well. I would build it as a true 30 cal using 308 bullets. The 30/40Krag will exceed 2600 fps with 180s in a strong action. I would expect the Russian to do about 2750 (it's a little bigger).
Rimmed cartridges are a little bit limiting as far as action choice goes although anything can be made to work.
When it comes to accuracy there is no reason to think it wouldn't match any other mid sized 30. Regards, Bill
