This is probably a stupid idea and question, but here goes. Is there a cartridge that would fit well in a standard Mauser M98 action that is an old/older factory round. To use as half of a matched pair (the other being a 375H&H) for varmint and small game (PG). I really like the Persian 98/29 and would like to build both guns on them, instead of using an intermediate action for the smaller gun.The Persians are just so nice and tight. Have been thinking of the 6.5x55 with 140gn bullets but was thinking is a shame to put it in a standard 98 action instead of an intermediate action. The 6.5x55 is probably my ideal cartridge for what I want to use it for.But just hate to put it in a standard M98 action. It seams so inefficient. Are there any cartridges with similar performance but a better fit in a Standard M98 action? Or would the not be that bad of a fit in a standard action? 7x57 would be my choice for the bullet weight your interested in. If you decide on a cartridge more suited to lighter bullets, I'd suggest the 257 Roberts or the 6mm Rem. I have standard 98's in all of the above chamberings.

I'm just finishing a 2 rifle project one on a small ring Mauser 96 in 257 Roberts and the other on a 98 in 9.3x62 and I am very happy with this big brother little brother pair. A 6.5 and a 9.3 would make a nice pair as would a 7x57 and a 9.3. Good luck on your projects.

I have been giong thru old posts on the subject of the 6.5x55 on a standard M98 action. That may not be that bad of a fit. What do you guys think? A good fit or cartrage to small & action to big? Should I just put a 6.5x55 In a 27/47? The problem is I dont like that action as well as the Perisan 98/29. Allen It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

Depending on the bullet used, the max OAL's for the 6.5x55 and the 7x57 are almost identical. As far as which round will "fit" better in a standard 98, it's pretty much six of one and a half dozen of the other.

since the topend of north American game will be covered by a .375 H-H make the other a .257 Roberts. The length is perfect for the 98 Mausers and it will handle everything to and including mule deer. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! So there would not be a lot of "wasted" room in the mag box? Was the standard M98 designed for the 57mm cartrages? Allen It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

Look at the 7 X 64....it's very much like the .280 Remington.....maybe a bit big for you but it will fir the Persian well /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." SInce you want a dual purpose deer/varmint, the 257Roberts is a great choice. The 6.5x55 or a 6.5x284 would also work well. For varmints, I wouldn't want to go over a 6.5 & for deer size game, I like to stay above 6mm. There are many good bullets available in 6.5, & 25 for that matter, to handle varmints to big deer & everything inbetween. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

Another vote for 7 x 64. Great old cartridge. I'm a fan of the 6.5 x 55 but for your project I'd step up to the Brenneke.
