Anybody have any data for IMR 7828 with 165 and 180's in the 30-06? I know Steve has some data, I would like to see some velocities listed as well as charge weights for this powder. It works great in the 280 so I thought I would try it in my 06. Any help would be great. Thanks

Steve, I have tested 7828 in my son's 06 under a 180gr SGK. Accuracy was right @ 1moa w/ 61gr in Fed. OF brass @ 2750fps from his 22"bbl. You'll need a drop tube to get it all in. I also like RL22 under 180gr bullets. I love 7828 in my .280, it is THE powder for that great, underated 7mm. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

Fred, how many grs of IMR 7828 and what bullet are you shooting in your 280? Do you know what the bullet speed is? One load I settled on for mine was 57 grs of AA3100/162 gr. Hornady BTSP @ 2920 fps. 280's are real Sweethearts! Godsdog.

IMR 7828 is very close in speed (just a tad slower) than the original surplus 4831. While I haven't used 7828 in the '06, I've found that surplus 4831 is acceptable with heavier bullets. Results vary in different guns. A 22" Remington turned in only about 2550 fps with a 180 grain bullet and a full case, while a 24.4" Sako did much better, up in the 2700 fps range. A 180 grain bullet is as light as I'd care to use with such a slow powder, while a 200 grain bullet might turn in near-optimal velocities. I don't think it is possible to get enough 7828 in an '06 case to get you into pressure troubles, so just cram as much in as you can seat the bullet on top of and you may have a good load, depending on the gun.

GD, I have settled on 57gr under a 160gr NP or Speer or NAB. Vel. is about 2850fps. 57.5gr gets me close to 2900fps but is too hot on really warm days. Accuracy is 1moa but I have shot several .5moa out @ 300yds, and that's from a very light, 23" bbl. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

quote:I think this is true. I used a load of 63 grains of IMR 7828 in Winchester brass, with a CCI 200 primer, under a 200 grain Speer spitzer bullet, and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die. Getting that much powder into a 30/06 case requires a drop tube, or slowly pouring it into a powder funnel and allowing it to "spin" into the case. Also, this is a very highly compressed load. It gave me 2784 to 2801 f.p.s. from a Browning Safari rifle, the one built on an FN Mauser action. Accuracy was not very good -- 3.92" for a four-shot group at 200 yards -- but then accuracy from this rifle has never been very good.
