Hello, I'm new to your site and was hoping someone could help me out. Could someone give an educated ballpark guess what my muzzle velocity is on the following load (I don't own a chronograph), .270 Win 130 Accubonds 55gr of IMR-4831, Fed 215 primer from a 22" Brl Ruger 77. I am trying to get an idea on trajectory. I'm leaving in a couple weeks to go on a Wyoming deer hunt! Thanks guys

thats tough to call. its probably from 2900 to 3100f/s . the only true way to know is to shoot the rifle at the distances you are comfortable shooting. you really should shoot when you get there and then you will be close. the 270 shoots pretty flat out to 300yrds. I sight mine in at 1 1/2" high at 100yrds. then you can hold pretty much right on out to 450/500yrds. Dave

Thanks for the response. I was figuring around 2900+/-, but without a chrono there is no way to tell for sure. The nosler book I had access to did not list this powder/bullet combo, so I appreciate any input. Thanks again. JF

A 450-500 yd point-blank range is pretty optimistic. A 130gr bullet doing 3100 at the muzzle, sighted 1.5" high at 100yds would be ~6" low at 300. At 500yds, you'd be 36" low. I'd say no hold over required out to ~275 with the sights set that way. You could get that up to 300yds if you set the sights 2.5" high at 100 (=3" low at 300). That's about the limit for the MPBR of the 270Win with a 130gr bullet.

thats the way I see it hi on the sholder should put in the boiler// oh your caculator is off by about 25" Field Ballistics. What is useful for your desktop computer in your home is not what you need in the field trying to make a shot at a moving target 500 yards away on a cold day far from your training range. Sounds spot on.

So do you fella's think that my particular load is pushing 3100 fps at the muzzle? That would be great, I was hoping that load would get 2900. Thanks again for the replies. JWF

JF You're probably between 2900 and 3000 with that load... closer to 2900 with the 22" barrel. For trajectory's sake, I'd use 2900 in your calculator. And unless you have some of those "magic bullets" that are apparently out there, put 'em 2.5" high at 100 and be happy to hold pretty much right on out to 300yds like the rest of us. JF Almost all of my experience with reloading for a 270 was with H4831. In that load I used 62.0 grains of H4831 with a 130 grain Nosler BT and out of a 22" barrel my velocity through a chronograph was 3040 fps. I don't know how that translate into a IMR4831 loading but my H4831 load was definitely at the upper end. It would fill the case completely and require a drop tube and a WW case to get all the powder in. That load shot many mule deer and elk here in Idaho and Montana where the rifle currently is. See if one of your buddies or some one where you shoot has a chronograph as they would be glad to let you shoot a few shots through it. I would sight my shooter in a 3.0" high at 100 yards and it would be point blank out to about 325. The only hard part was holding a little low for those shots around 200 but most of the shots out here in Idaho were on the long side and it was magic at those longer distances.

I use the 20818 rule. +2 at 100+, 0 at 200, -8 at 300, -18 at 400, anything further is too far for me. I shoot 140 Accubonds and 150 ballistic tips in the 270Win. YMMV

JF: I took the liberty of running your info thru my copy of Quickload then thru Quicktarget. Here's what I got back: 130 gr. Accubond 55.0 gr. IMR-4831 Barrel - 22" I assumed your scope height was close to a scope I have on a similar rifle & so used a height of 1.97" QL came back with a vel. of 2920 fps. QT recommended a PBR of 252 yds. This puts the POI @ 100 yds. at +2.5" POI @ 300 yds. is -3.6" POI @ 350 yds. is -9.0" POI @ 400 yds. is -16.1" Hope this helps some. Have fun, good luck but be sure to try your rifle at the ranges you expect to shoot. Understand too that this is only a prediction.
