I'm looking for the lightest posible loads I can make for use in the following guns:

338 Win Mag with 220gr lead cast bullet
338-06 with 220gr lead cast bullet
30-06 with 185gr lead cast bullet

I have bullet moulds for these calibers and I'd like to get rounds loaded for these rifles so that my wife (5'5", 108lbs.) can shoot them with me with very little recoil. She has fired other rifles and hates recoil. I am hoping to get her into more than just 22 rimfires. The loads need only be accurate to 50 yards or so.

Thanks.

Do you have access to a Lyman # 3 Cast Bullet Manual? If not, let me know what powders you have available or what velocities you are looking for and I will be happy to forward what the Lyman manual has listed.

Powders I have are:
700X
WSF
800X
H110
IMR4227
IMR4064
W748
Rl 15
IMR4350
IMR4831

I'm hoping for only 12-1300 fps, basically a full bore 22 rimfire so it's easy on my steel targets

12 grains of 700x will be good for circa 1200fps in the 338, max listed for a 249 grian bulet is 15.5 grains at 1390 fps, the max listed for a 203 grian bulelt is 16 grains at 1580 fps.

For the 30-06, Lyman shows 9.5 grains of 700x as starting a 213 rain bullet and maxing at 12.5 Velocities are 1172/1381 respectively. they show a 220 rainer, but no 700x with that bullet. As there are only 7 grains between the two bullets, I'd certainly give the start load a try.

Not really an answer to your specific question, but a suggestion. If you want to get her into shooting something more than a .22 LR buy a mil-surp SKS. Ammo is very cheap and recoil is almost non-existent. My wife shoots that down at the range and likes it better than anything else we shoot there, except for maybe pistols.

I use red dot or herco. 5 to 10 grs of red works well
