My S-I-L and I both have 308s, he has a Ruger American and I have a Browning A-bolt. Both rifles will shoot bug hole groups at 100yds but the velocity is sloooow, like 2450 ft/sec with 165 grain bullets. He uses a different powder than me but can't remember what he burns in his, I use IMR4064. Every powder I have tried to load with more speed turns the accuracy into shotgun patterns. Is this normal? I have loaded for a couple other 308s but never ran them over a chronograph. With my Browning I have shot steel at 500 meters without trouble but I thought this cartridge was accurate at higher speeds.

You don't mention exactly what your load is, nor how long your barrel is, but the short answer is you should be doing better. I shot these groups this morning at my local range, distance to target 400 yards. Powder is Varget, bullets 175 Sierra MK, and 185 Berger LRBT. Winchester brass and Federal 210M primers. Barrel is a Rock Creek 5R at 26.5" in length, my friends Bartlein 22" is as fast. Because I also use a suppressor these are not the hottest loads I could chose to fire! Sounds like you need some load development.

My load is 44 grains of Norma 203B/Federal match primer, with a 150 grain Nolser Accubond. Approx. 2700 FPS out of my Mauser M03 it puts them all closed together!

My best (most accurate) loads with 168 is at about 2500-2600 fps. this is in a savage 99 and M1A using BLC2, IMR4895 and AR-Comp.

The only way to know for sure what the velocity of a bullet is when it exits your muzzle is to measure it with a chronograph. There is enough differences in barrels that it would be unlikely that the velocity I get with a load would be the same velocity in any other gun with the same load.
I have seen 200 fps difference in two (otherwise identical) 357 revolvers using the same loads. That was with 6" barrels. The slower velocity was accompanied with the beginning signs of over-pressure.
This told me that velocity and pressure had little correlation as it ignores the variations in barrel finish and size differences.

Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

Have had very good success with both AA2520 and RL-15 for accuracy with decent speed in .308 Win.

I do like groups under a 1/2" at 100 yards.
