Use any 150 gr. flat nose. They are made for the .30-30 and will perform well at that velocity out to perhaps 125 yards at that speed.

Don't pass up the 125g bullets from Sierra or even Remington's 125g psp. Both shoot well for me in nice reduced loads. The fact that they would open and work like varmint bullets at normal velocity won't keep them from holding together at lower speeds. Recoil is the biggest thing I would be concerned about....

Cheers,

Dan

If hunting in pretty clean shooting (no brush, twigs etc) I'd go with a nos ballistic tip or a hornady sst.

popcornA number of us have found that the Berrey 150gr. plated bullet driven at 1800 fps. gives great accuracy from almost all the rifles we've tried. The recoil is almsot non existant. The price of these bullets the last time I bought them was less than $70.00/k. BOOMroger

anyone ever use use the 130 gr. hornady single shot pistol bullet. its apparently designed for the contender 30-30. ill be using it in a savage bolt gun in 30-30 and also down load some in a 16" ruger frontier 308. i'd like to find loads that give them both 2K FPS or so.

I've used sierra's in my 7-30 waters. I'd say you have a great idea there. I think sierra makes a 30 cal like that to.....if so maybe give the sierra hotline a call and get a recomended load from them for their bullet...they are pretty good with advice there.

PS--there probably isn't much diff in recoil between a 130 going 2000 fps and one going 2300 anyhow????

KSTEPHENS,

I shoot the 130 SSP bullet in my 340 Savage and with 34 gr. of IMR 3031, it'll stay under an inch at 100 yds.

I never chronographed the load so I don't know how fast it's going.

IMR 3031 and W748 both work really well in the 30-30.

i'd say its getting along pretty good.
Hogden says may load is 31.5 for IMR 3031 at 2300 or so and 33,500 CUP.

It may be pretty hot, but, no pressure signs.

My Hornady manual has 31.4 gr. of IMR 3031 as max for 150 gr. bullets for 2200 fps.
