Based on a few recent emails requesting some load info on Blue Dot and the 243, here is a repost of the info and research that I have posted before...

Conclusions:

1. I consider the 243 much more versatile for a first rifle using these loads than starting a younger shooter out on a 223 or 22/250. It will duplicate the other two rounds, plus has the ability to handle a heavier bullet while still giving mild recoil characteristics.
2. The 243 offers a wide variety of bullets from 55 grain to 105 grain for hunting, and even 107 and 115 grain bullets for long range target shooting and competition.
3. Some bullets that are lighter than other bullets reach max pressure signs at lower powder charges, than a few heavier bullets. This is caused by the load bearing surface of the bullet.

Observations:

1. Contrary to what is usually seen, or expected: In using trees about 8 inches in diameter as backstops, I noticed that in the 2200 to 2800 fps range, most of the varmint bullets were actually penetrating thru the trees completely. Since they are suppose to be fragile for varmint applications, I did not expect to see this. However It was observed in the 55 grain Ballistic Tip, the 60 grain Sierra Hollow Point and the 75 grain Hornady Hollow Point.
2. Therefore it is my PERSONAL conclusion that these bullets might be considered as potential bullets on deer sized game in parts of the country where deer only get to be Antelope sized animals.
3. If this is done, the results are strictly the responsibility of the handloader and shooter. IN the 2200 to 2800 fps range, the rear core is staying intact and not exploding like is advertised a varmint bullet should do. Over this speed the bullet is performing in the explosive manner as designed.
4. I got input from other shooters on an internet forum asking about their experience with this bullet, there were some successes, some failures, and many recommendations for a larger bullet. However, if someone desires to use these varmint style bullets, I advise testing them yourself and analyse your results before deciding to use them.

As always, work your loads up from a point long before listed maximum.

I hope that this information is useful in teaching new and young shooters how to shoot properly and safely. Recoil will be substantially less than typical factory loads. This should assist in accurate shot placement by the shooter.

Even though I don't have a .243, I do appreciate you sharing your blue dot tests, as it turned me onto blue dot in the .308, something I'm thankful for.

In regards to the comments about varmint bullets at lower speeds penetrating deeply, you betcha! I was fiddling around with my new to me 218 mashburn 10" contender, and decided to fire form some cases in the garage. I got the idea that 5 gr of red dot under a 60 gr hp should nicele form a case, and figured 3 2X4's stacked up under a 4X4 (8" thick) whould be plenty to stop it...

Well after the pop, I pulled up the first 2X4, and found a nice 22 cal hole through it, same for the next one, the one after that, and when I finally lifted up the 4X4 I found the bullet went completely through it, hit the concrete floor, and completely turned itself inside out. As I recall, a later chrono session clocked that load at some 1800 fps. I wouldn't use it as a hunting load, amongst other things it keyholed, but it did prove that you can get considerable penetration out of a small spitzer bullet!!! Needless to say, I don't fireform cases in the garage any more.

Don't be fooled by penetration tests in wood......... in my experience bullets many times react completely different in wood than they do in flesh and bone , particularly hollow points.

The true varmint bullets are designed to provide explosive expansion in flesh well down into the low 2000fps range .

I agree with SDgunslinger, varmint bullets are for varmints...push em fast and expect them to blow up as designed. I just had an interesting thing happen to me with a 10/22 and PMC subsonic 38 gr HPs. I shot a broken lacrosse helmet on a 2x4 at about 175 yds and it fully penetrated the helmet shell (hard plasstic), the soft rubber liner and the 2x4 pressure treated post the skinny way and didn't seem to expand at all. At 30 yds, they blow up tree rats.....I was really surprised at the long range (for a 22 LR) performance.

Paul, I have fireformed a lot of rifle cases in the garage using eight to ten grains of Unique or similar, corn meal or Cream of Wheat, and a tuft of either kleenex or toilet paper. Prime the case, add the Unique, fill the case to the base of the neck, and add the tuft of Kleenex, enough to effectively plug the neck. Chamber the case and pull the trigger. Collect the cases and sweep up the corn meal. Works well, and makes very little noise...
