It is far better to form 25-06 brass from 270 brass rather than 30-06. You just run 270 brass through a 25-06 full-length sizing die. B/C of the longer neck of the 270 case, you will have to trim a substantial amount. If you persist on forming brass from 30-06 cases, I would advise you to first run the cases through a 270 sizing die and the the 25-06 sizer. I always by new rem cases for my 25-06, simply because its alot easier.

According to my Speer manual you can use either one. Just make sure you trim before loading. I had 200 rounds of once fired 30-06 brass that i sized for my 25-06. I did not have any problems. Use a good sizing lube and make sure you brush the inside of the neck with lube as well.

I have made it both ways. I have a bunch of 270 brass, so thats what I use most.

270 to 25-06 is a lot of neck to trim with a normal trimmer. I found a 25-06 trim die a the gun show, it trims enough, but I use the trimmer to square the mouth. Eventualy, I took the screw that holds the handle on my trimmer to the hardware store. I bought a long screw of the same thread and two nuts. I cut off the screw head and used the nuts as jam nuts. Add a cordless drill, and I have a powered trimmer cheaply.

I would rather use the 30-06 case for the 25-06.they are the same length, the shoulder angle and location are the same, all you have to do is neck it down and turn the neck for thickness.plus 30 06 brass is usually plentiful and cheap.

From the Man himself, John J Donnelly "The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions"

Make from .30-06. Fls in .25-06 die.
.270W may be used but, needs more length trimming.

Chris, could it be that you are located in Europe (where the .25-06 is indeed an odd-ball caliber)?? Perhaps even in Holland or Belgium, just judging from your name??

If you decide to neck down a case to obtain .25-06 brass, please be aware:

- the thickness of your case neck will grow in the neck down operation, so make darn sure your loaded rounds (in the necked down cases) has a neck diameter suitable to your chamber. Measure the neck diameter of a (factory round) .25-06 fired in your chamber, this will approach the chamber internal neck diameter. You need at least .002" clearance between loaded round and chamber neck diameter. If your necks are too thick, you'll have to turn them, as jb mentioned above. That is a fair amount of work.

- should you decide to go hunting anywhere including a bit of international travel, you *could* run into problems at a border post with your cartridges marked differently to your rifle. In particular, if you use .30-06 cases as the basis for your cartridge conversion, and you'd travel to a country (e.g. France or Belgium), where the .30-06 is not allowed.

Have you considered the option of doing a formal import of .25-06 cases from the States?? It is a bit of a hassle, but it can be done with a bit of time and expense. See Sinclair International Customer Information Page for an example of what is involved. With 400-1000 cases in hand, you'd be good to go for quite a while...

Back when, I needed some 6.5 X 55 brass and there was just none to be had. I found I could make it from 30-06 brass even though the bases are different. I bought new brass, annealed the necks, formed in stages with a .257 die, then 6.5 die, trimmed, reamed and outside turned them. I annealed again and fire formed them. They shot good. I finally found Norma brass so the formed ones sat in the box. I went back and looked at them a year later and all of the necks had split. Can someone explain why this happened? Remington brass.

Good guess neighbour ! I am from Belgium.
Thanks for mentioning the problem of the identification of the cases. The 30-06 is a special detention !
Concerning the import of brass from USA: with our NEW DAMNED GUNLAW comming up it will be quetly impossible to import something of gun & reloading parts !
