reddy375What is the Vel you get using 250 grain bullets in standard 35 whelen?
What velocities are you getting in your standard 35 whelen's, specifically using 250 grain bullets & Varget powder? How many grains and please mention the bullet also.
I am getting 2461 with 55 grains, which Varget says is Max load, am wondering if I can go up a grain or so to get to 2500! I am using 250 speer bullets.
At 2461 its not shooting very accurately am wondering if vel. is the issue!
Thanks,
AR

RMillerIn my handi rifle 55 grains varget was 2525 with a 250 soft point spitzer. They were bulk bullets so it did not say the brand.

hivelositychecked my data and I was getting 2350f/s with 52 grs of Varget. 40 ft a sec is nothing as long as there accurate

SnellstromYou might try seating the bullet out a little further closer to the lands and see if your groups tighten up a bit, usually I've found that the longer the overall length the more velocity so you may get a speed gain as well.
I'd be more worried about accuracy than speed, if you find accuracy deal with that speed.
55 grains of Varget yielded just over 2500. Old, old custom chamber so yours may vary!
53 grains of AA 2015 got me over 2600.
25.5" barrel and Hornady 250 interlock.
Both Loads I would say closing in on 60K PSI

ramrod340Never got an accurate load with Varget. 250 Partitions and 55grs of RL15 worked for me.
As usual just my $.02

What do you mean by "not shooting very accurately". 1.5 inch 3 shot group for a hunting rifle is good accuracy.
That will not be enough for Mongolian elk at 700 yds!

Just kidding - I know you like bug size groups.
I would go up 1 grain as the velocity is within the max limit & so pressure must also be the within.
Also note that SAMI spec for the 35Whelan takes into account the pump action rifles.
CAUTION: Hodgdon manual says 250gr Hirnady bullet with Varget is max 2486 fps
It would be interesting to see what the Lyman load is with pressure data.
I would also look at the loads of 358 Win & 9.3X62 with 250 bullets. The 35 Whelan would be in between those.

Mine likes 56 grains of 4320 with any Hornady, Speer and Nosler 250 grain bullets. It thinks it's a varmint gun (sub MOA) and runs 2500-2550 for velocity.
"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." Lyman 49th edition list Varget oal 3.255" at min. 49.5gr 2178f/s 40,300Cup... a max load at 55gr 2413f/s and 50,400cup. Remington brass a 250gr Hornady SP. #3520
Test was with a universal rec. 24" 1-16 twist with a .3575grove dia.
Some good info.

jeffeosso22" barrel, h335, 2400 with a 250,, rel 15, right at 2500 .. didn't try for more, as those seemed reasonable loaded ... and a deer or hog can't tell 100 fps

sambarman338There's a lot to be said for following the book, as quoted by hivelosity. If you need more, well, there's always the 358 Norma Mag.

reddy375Thanks everyone I think I am going to try 225 grain bullets maybe my gun will like those with RL 15!!!
It's more than accurate for hunting but I like my guns to shoot 1" or under at 100 yards.
Will report back next week....

frankinthelaurels2400-2500 and that might be a push...either way it's more than enough to handle most things you'd care to send one through....

Yentna RiverIMR4320 and RL15 got me 2550fps in a 22" barrel but really, what can't you kill with a 250gr bullet at 2461fps? It's going to do a lot of very bad things to the vital organs and might get better penetration at your velocity. What 250gr bullet are you working with?

georgeldGood to have something to compare with finally.
Same bullet, out of my .358 Ult/Mag with 90gr 7828, 15 shot avg 2884fps. I have some test loads up to 100gr I want to chrony yet.
Nearly double the powder to gain 400fps ??!!

MARK H. YOUNGArjun,
I bought a 35 Whelen when Remington chambered their 700 Classic in that caliber. My load was:
250 Hot Cor
57 gr IMR 4320
Rem cases
Rem 9.5 primers
3.40 OACL
2500 fps Chronographed
5 in 1.6 inches and it killed moose very dead.

Jim KnightIf you want all the "design of the brass and modern action (or Mod 98 mauser)" will give you, there is no reason not to load the Whelen to 270 Winchester pressures (65K)...or at least 308(62K) Your individual rifle may not go up that high, nor your accuracy be what you want, but its not hard to find a load, (especially with our modern powders) that will give you 2500fps/250 easily, maybe even close to 2600 from a 22" bbl. I like R15 for the 250 to 310 and H322 for the 200 TTSX. Now, understand what all Whelen users "know for a fact"...it is a real killer at 2300-2400! ha But no reason not to experiment with the appropriate caution. I do believe the heavies add a "thump" to elk size animals, but I killed quite a few Plains Game with the 200X going 2950 ( this was a moderate load in my 35 Whelen Ackley Improved)The same bullet at 2800 would be indistinguishable in the field from the 2950 load. Good luck to you pard.

reddy375I loaded up some 225 sierra up to max load of 59 grains RL 15, groups shrank to 1/2"! I guess my gun prefers 225 grain bullets. I am going to shoot some 225 Swift A frames next, lets hope they are as accurate and also chrono all the loads.
Thanks everyone for your comments.
