Which .223 brass is the best? Normally I would guess lapua is but I heard somewhere that they contract their .223 out, making it no better then average. Is lake city any good, I've seen 1000 new lake city cases advertised as low as $130.

Hey there,
I have been shooting LC brass in most if my 223's from hi speed AR's to my bolt action varmint rig. For the work i do the brass does great. I keep it seperated by gun. I am neck sizing the rounds for the bolt gun and FL the others. LC brass seems to hold up well. Your choice really depends on what type of gun you are shooting and what you are shooting for. There is a big difference in shooting sub MOA and shooting beer cans with your pals. Maybe not the exact reply you were looking for but its a reply nun the less.

Ross Seyfried in one of his articles said that he felt the 223 lake city brass was the strongest

130 dollars for 1000 Lake City!! You can get it cleaned, resized and trimmed for 50 bucks a thousand at River Valley ordinance. As to accuracy, I believe it's in the quality of the barrel and chambering job and I've shot lots of X's at 600 yards with the LC stuff.

The local police department leaves about 10,000 fired Winchester .223 cases laying at the range every year and I'm apparently the only one bothering to pick them up. Therefore, Winchester is the best brass!

Hey Bullet_Proof, I've used lots of different kinds of cases and it seems the quality is more or less a "Lot dependant" situation. Some Lots of Rem, Win or Fed have been just excellent. Only remember ever getting " 1 " bad Lot, so there is no use to beat up the manufacturer.

Recently bought 1000 Once-Fired Fed 223Rem cases from www.brassmanbrass.com and they have proven to be fine. Obviously from "mixed Lots", but the price was $15 plus Shipping when I got mine. I think the normal price is $25 plus Shipping, but you will have to check their site to be sure.

Did a sort and prep on the 1000 pieces and I think I trashed 60 or so cases. Some were just other brands and a couple had Frame Cuts in the case from being ejected by a semiauto.

Good bargain on some fine Federal cases.

thanks everyone for the replies. Looks like I'll shop around for better prices on the lake city stuff. So is lapua's .223 made by them then? or contracted. Maybe I'll try some of their brass too.

Thomas, I meant 'gophers'. Everyone i talk to here uses both terms though.

Bullet_Proof,

I have gotten some of my best accuracy and case life from LC brass (various dates on headstamp...military brass) and Federal brass. These reloads were/are fired in a T/C Super 14" barrel. Many of the LC and Federal brass has been reload in the high teens number of times. Accuracy is M.O.A. out to 150+ yards. The military once-fired brass was dirt cheap some years ago. Don't know about today. Might be worth a try if you can find a supplier. I bought several thousand pieces of the brass so I am probably "good for life"! Good-luck...BCB

I tried IMI,(Israeli brass) a few years ago when necking 223's up to 6x45's as they had an annealed neck. Since that time I use it exclusively and even like it better than my Lapua brass, but your limited to 223 and 308 with the IMI....otherwise I will go with Lapua brass in all other calibers...RWS is also extremely fine brass but expensive. WW brass has always been excellent brass.

Thanks everyone for the input. Since the investment with most brands isn't that much I think I'll try a few and see how they perform.

Rezdog if your interested in selling some of your winchester brass I would be interested also.

Thanks again everyone,
Brett

I agree with Hot Core, it depends on the run. I've had excellent luck with Federal Gold. It's not particularly expensive and theres few culls. If I'm shooting a sub inch bolt gun I always segregate by weight, ream flash holes, and uniform the primer pockets. Even less expensive brass usually responds to that. As Atkinson mentioned I've heard great things about IMI, I shoot IMI .06 brass in a 25.06 and it's very uniform , also thickens the neck a bit for a tighter neck (be sure to measure) every little bit helps. ---Shoot Safe---montdoug
