How well does the 50 gr Speer TNT bullet generally perform in a 1-9 twist AR 15? Is it adequate for coyote sized game?

I've only used the 50 TNT in a .222 Rem with a twist of about 1-14". It doesn't use up much space on the target in making 5 holes. Speer cautions against shooting it at more than 3400 fps (meaning limit it to .223 velocities or less).

I can't say how it might act in a faster twist barrel; only shooting it in your individual gun will tell that tale. As to adequacy for coyotes, unless your coyotes are into Kevlar sweaters, it will extinguish them just fine.

Think big holes. Probably not the best bullet if you intend to keep the pelts, but they will do a great job decorating the prairie with them.

The ones that actually make it to the coyote ought to work pretty well.

Plan on loosing at least 1 out of 10 shots; more as your throat wears.

i have been shooting the 50 gr tnts in my R15 with a 1/9 twist and aa2230c power and rem cases best to date group was .061 at 100 yds. using 25.7 gr of power. have also tried 55 gr tnts with 25.5 gr of 2230c and ten shot group was .268 at 100 yds havent shot anything bigger than an eastern montana p-dog even out to 400 yds they destroyed them almost compleatly

I've not used one in a Semi-Auto, but..., the thing that would possibly concern me is the "Tip" of the TNT might cause a Feed problem and then again, they may do fine in your rifle. If they do cause a Feed issue, altering the Seating Depth might cure it.

They are designed for 223Rem Velocities and will open very rapidly on Varmints. They do not always Exit on Dog size critters, which depends on the Impact Velocity and where they actually hit the animal. But, they can Exit Lung-to-Lung and leave a fairly Large hole.

Excellent cost/bullet, fine accuracy in everything I've tried them in and do Kill well. But, you are fortunate that a lot of 22cal Bullets also fit those same criteria.

I'd recommend you buy a 100 count box at your local Gun Shop and if they work well in your rifle, then buy the 1000 count box.

With the faster twist, if you run the velocity up there for a 223, I'd check with Speer to see if the fragile TNT will be able to withstand the higher RPMs the one in 9 twist will give..

I know the SPSX Hornadys vaporize out of the barrel on my Savage with a one in 9 twist, unless I throttle the MV WAY down..

Speer also makes a 55 grain TNT meant for 22.250s and 220 Swifts, which will take a higher RPM number than the 50 grain TNT will..

I had a 1/9 223 that shot Hornady SX pretty good at first. Then it started blowing them up after around 1,000 rounds through the barrel. So I tried Sierra Blitz and the Speer TNTs... same story.
Went to tougher bullets like the Nosler BT and all was fine.

I've fired a truck load of 50 gr TNTs in .220 Swift, .22-250 and .223 and in the .223 with 1-9" twist.....in a .22-250 in a 1-12" twist.

I never had one not make it to the target....

It has a fairly small hollow point compared to other Speer varmint HPs.....and it seems to help it stay in tact....until it hits something.....and then all hell breaks loose!

I love em...great varmint bullets and they'll do coyotes in a heartbeat!
