Could someone post a picture of an Ackley Improved cartridge or Gibbs next to its original. I have quite a few friends that don't know the difference and they need a visual. I think this would help a lot of others on this site too. thanks -Everybody has a dream hunt, mine just happens to be for a Moose.- -The 30-06 is like a perfect steak next to a campfire, a .300 Win Mag is the same but with mushrooms and a baked potato-

I will see if I can come up with a photo of a Gibbs cartridge or two. I have an old Handloader magazine with photos of one of the Gibbs rounds, I think. And fwiw, I think there are handicapped individuals who would disagree fervently about whether being in an auto is hunting or not. Just a thought...

Thanks for the effort, and thanks for reminding me of people who are handicapped hunters. I was a little ticked at a story I was told recently and that got the steam off but it was illmanerd and unneeded. I'll remove it... -Everybody has a dream hunt, mine just happens to be for a Moose.- -The 30-06 is like a perfect steak next to a campfire, a .300 Win Mag is the same but with mushrooms and a baked potato-

I looked at your drawing of the .30 Gibbs. It shows a shoulder angle of 27 degrees. The .25 Gibbs drawing shows a shoulder angle of 35 degrees. I believe ALL Gibbs cartridges have the same shoulder - 35 degrees. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

I do believe the drawing I have on my site is correct. It is the original Rocky Gibbs specs for his .30 caliber cartridge. It may have had the shoulder angle increased to 35 degrees at a later date.

Every piece of info I have on the Gibbs shows a 35deg shoulder. Not saying another angle was not used but I've never seen it. "Gibbs Cartridges" shows 35 on all. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Now, that's interesting!! What you say may be the explanation. I just looked at the Roger Stowers' book, GIBBS' CAR5TRIDGES and FRONT IGNITION LOADING TECHNIQUE published by Wolfe in 1991. In it, the 240, .25, 6.5mm, .270, 7mm, .30, 8mm, and .338 Gibbs rounds all seem to be sporting 35 degree shoulders. Stowers had this to say about them: "The Gibbs cartridges were based on the .30/'06 case, and were identical except for neck diameter." Here's a picture FROM THE STOWERS' BOOKof the 240 - .338 GIBBS rounds. I understand there is also a .35 GIBBS, but have never seen one.....: "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

I have seen a 35 Gibbs (so called). One has to be careful when encountering Gibbs cartridges. Some wildcatters have made their own and attached the Gibbs name to them when in fact Gibbs was long dead at the time. Some have been called "Short Neck Improved" and other such names. I even saw one called a "Short Neck Ackley Gibbs". Ray Arizona Mountains

Craigster Go over to Benchrest Central, General Discussion Forum, "Front Powder Ignition". There is a discussion going on over there. I have posted a photo of a front ignition tube. Ray Arizona Mountains

Front Ignition is when the powder column is ignited from the front rather than the rear. This technique has been used extensively by the military in some of their big guns. The technique that Rock used was to modify the case to include a small brass tube that screwed into the primer hole. This tube then ran upward to just short of the shoulder junction with the body. This is definately an advanced topic and kids dont do this at home. Ray ...look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
