I picked up a box of Barnes X 150 gr boattails for nearly half price and need some Barnes data. Anyone have experience with this combo? Thanks

BigNate,
Welcome to our Forum.

The 7 Mag / 150 Barnes "X" SBT is about the only combination I've found, in any caliber, where the maximum load wound up the same for both coated and uncoated bullets. 67.5 grains Grains of IMR-4831 gives 3,260+ in my 26" barrel Browning, using new Winchester brass. Using the same 1x fired, neck sized only cases, this same load averaged 3,300 to 3,325. I suggest you start with 64 grains and go up in full grain increments to 67 grains, IF you get that far with your rifle.

This is from the Barnes #2 manual, for the 7mm Rem mag with their 150gr X bullets.

Powder start MAX
H414 54.0 59.0
H4350 53.0 58.0
H4831 60.0 65.0
H1000 68.5 73.5
IMR4831 59.0 64.0
IMR7828 63.0 68.0
Win WMR 62.0 67.0

All loads listed produced 3,000 ft/sec except IMR 4350 which was 2,900.
I have shot a lot of X bullets in the 7 WBY mag and a custom 7STW. In my experience it is all but impossibe to get them to shoot as good as conventional jacketed bullets. However, when it comes to terminal performance, Barnes X bullets are very hard to beat. They keep going, and going, and going. I have NEVER recovered one from a whitetailed deer.
For what its worth, a Nosler Ballistic Tip will, IMO, put down a whitetail faster if hit broadside in the chest but an X bullet can be relied on to smash through bone which is not a quality you can attribute to many other conventional bullet designs.
There are pros and cons to both designs.

Thanks for the help! Incidentally, I have been using 140 gr. Sierra Gameking's pushed with 67.3gr. of RL19 and a CCI primer. They shoot as well as I do and worked on an Idaho Mule Deer this fall with decent results. I just happen to feel the urge and found a good deal on these bullets! Thanks again,
