Good day to all,
What powders do you use in your 375 JDJ? I'm presently using AA2520 but am having trouble finding it in Manitoba. I can order it from Calgary but it gets expensive.
Thanks
Mike

Mike- I use H4198 with 220 hornady, 47grains,JD lists 48grains as max. Some load data from JDJ, 55grains RE-15 and 270 Hornady, 53grains IMR-4064 with 270 Hornady, 50grains H322 with 235 Speer, 49grains RE-7 with 220 Hornady. These are max loads so reduce 10 to 15% and work up. The 47grain load with with 220Hornady run 2260fps in my 14" JDJ barrel. I hope this helps some Mike.

Thanks for load data!!! What powder gives you the best burn-out(no powder kernnels left in barrel after shooting)? I just got a 12" 375JDJ and have used AA2520 and Varget, both leave some in barrel after each shot.

I just got a barrel and recently did some hunting around. The top three powders look to be H4895, AA 2520 and Reloader 15.

All should serve you well! Let me know if you need specifics.

I haven't started reloading yet, so I don't know which one is best, this is just the data, I'm going off of!

Mike- I get less unburnt powder left with H4198 than any of the other powders. I think with your 12" barrel any powder you use will leave some unburnt bowder residue.

Albert,
What kind of luck are you having with the 220grain bullets. When I bought my barrel JD recomended the 270grs. I've used them and they are accurate but the bullet I shot my Mule deer with last fall was barely deformed. I've got some 270 grainers that I recovered from sandy dirt that are perfectly mushroomed but the one I shot my Mulie with could almost be reloaded. It's dented on the top half and that's it, the base is still almost perfectly round. I can email a picture if you're interested but I havn't figured out how to post pictures here yet. The deer was shot at 187 yards(1 of my paces = + or- a yard)The bullet hit the blade on the shoulder, went through the lung(only one I think)through the guts, smashed the pelvic bone anI found the bullet just poking out the meat of the rump. I couldn't see for the recoil but my girlfriend said he flinched but never stood up from his bed.

If you are talking about the 270 Hornady I've been reading that a lot recently. I have been thinking of trying a Barnes X for the lower velocity expansion, or possible the Nosler partition as I have heard good things about it too.

Mike, do you mind if I tag bullet selection choices along on your post? Hope not... [Smile]

Mike- I've used only the 220 Hornady bullets for my deer hunting, to date I've shot nothing over 100 yards with them and this bullet is awsum, out of the 20 odd deer I've shot with them only one bullet has been recovered and it was a spine shot at about 100 yards it was in pieces, all deer shot with them has been one shot and they are down on the spot even with bad hits. I'm going to try Hornadys 225 bullets one of these days to see how they perform. [Big Grin] I think they would be better than the 270's.

Hi Biathlonman
Here are the pics you wanted.
Pics # 1-4 were recovered from my mule deer.He was 187 yards and laying down. The bullet hit the small blade on the shoulderblade and went through 1 lung(from what I could tell)through the guts, shatered the pelvic bone, must have deflected and was just poking outside the meat against the hide on the rump.
Pics # 5-7 are recovered from dirt at 100 yards.

Both bullets are Hornady 270 grains with 52 grains AA2520 and a Federal 210 primer.
My contender barrel is a SSK 14" with ssk muzzle brake so actual barrel is?
As for bullet JD told me not to bother with the Nosler partitions on my African trip because they likely wouldn't expand in game at contender velocities. At the time he recomended Hornady 270gr for all the plainsgame I was after. He said that was probably the best bullet for elephant and cape buffalo also.I didn't hunt those.
Hope the pics turn out.
