Take a 416 Rigby case, and a fairly hard cast RCBS .417 diameter, 350 grain, gas checked bullet. Add a primer, and fill the case full of Trail Boss. Would that be too much of a good thing??

How much Trail Boss would give you about 1,650fps to 1,850fps??

I'm thinking in terms of a much fluffier (and case filling) variation on the AA 5744 theme.

Talk to me kids.

skeeter 317 contacted Hodgdon and got some good info. You could check with Hodgdon on the 416 but they were saying ALL calibers with cast bullets.

Thank you very much Bill.

Unfortunately AR is turning into a hit or miss situation for me.

I will look that data up.

BTW, that particular RCBS HCGC bullet is an awesome practice bullet.

Please let me know how it works for you. The onley negative I have heard is Trail Boss dosen't like to be compressed, it was made for non compressed loads.

I haven't confirmed this at all, but one knowledgeable shooter mentioned to me that he believes that Trail Boss is basically a modernized and refined version of a powder used in the 1890's as a transitional powder in the years between black powder and smokeless powder. His belief was that shooters could safely use it in firearms designed for black powder; with no smoke and safe velocity.

I will do more research. That would be interesting to know more about. Mayhaps I'll give the manufacturer a call tomorrow, and I will heed the warning to not compress it.

You may be right. The story I heard is it was develop for pistol cases. They wanted to have a powder that was extremely bulky and would light very easily also no chance of a double charge.
I remember reading some place that the old “transition powders” were made to be compressed like black powder.
Let me know what you find out.

Have been using TB in my cast Rigby loads for a while now. Was told by powder tech, fill case to base of bullet with TB and that is your max load. Reduce by 30% and that is your start load. (been a while but am sure that it is 30% for start load. please check for yourself with Hogdon tech.) Tried TB because couldn't resolve the case filler or not issue with 5774 and cast loads. Don't have speeds as reloading stuff is in my shop and I can't remember speeds off the top of my head.

Saskguy,

Johan Loubser told me not to use any wads or fillers with 5744. The data below are for the .450 Nitro x 3 1/4"

Johan Loubser was kind enough to supply this information on using his A-5744 powder for reduced loads in the .450 Nitro x 3 1/4". I asked because I felt it would be good for deer and such sized game.

Feel free to use the data as you think best.

A-5744. 450 3-1/4" NE. Reduced loads

From:"Johan Loubser" <johan@ramshot.com>

We suggest the following.

Caliber: .450 3¼” NE (Nitro Express).
Barrel: 24”
Powder: Accurate -- 5744

Bullet weight: 350 grains
Low load: 46.0grains (1750 – 1850 Ft/p/sec)
Mid Range load: 56.0grains (2050 – 2150Ft/p/sec)
Bullet weight: 400-405 grains
Low load: 44.0grains (1600 – 1700 Ft/p/sec)
Mid Range load: 53.0grains (1850 – 1950Ft/p/sec)

NOTES:

It’ important to note that SAFETY is our prime concern therefore we strongly recommend.

1. TO ALWAYS BEGIN LOADING AT THE RECOMMENDED MINIMUM “START” LOAD and develop loads in 2% increments towards the MAXIMUM load.

2. If at all possible, measure the velocity and correlate with our data.

Lawndart,

If memory serves, there was a transitional powder named "Bulk" that was to be loaded volume for volume like blackpowder.

Thank you guys! Things are falling into place.

That 450 NE data will get many a would be double rifle shooter on board the ship (the USS Enterprise versus the Titantic - BTW, who was in charge of keeping the young Ms. Winslet's left nipple hard for the painting scene? I lost interest after the merchant marine guy saluted, and then capped himself in veddy proper form).

I am going to offer large bore cartridge shooters three levels of fun (if it isn't fun all the way up the ladder, well that just ain't right).

5744 or Trail Boss with HCGC lead bullets to start. Inexpensive jacketed bullets for the next step up in power, practice and form. Finally the full up loads with Soft and solid hitting to the same point (that distance depends on repeater versus double), and loaded (padded) and hermetically sealed in a can with Nitrogen to puch out Oxygen with a small packet to absorb any traces of H2O.

"Here Mr. PH,, I'm leaving you with a few cans of 'Power-Ade' for the dash of your bakkie."
