I am looking for a good load for 100 to 300yds, and also out to 1000yds. Anyone been down this road before that can save me some miles. Thanks...

.308 Win.

46.0gr. Varget
168gr. MatchKing
CCI BR-2

Got this load off Green 788 and it works great out to 500 yards. I'm using a Rem 700VS with a Weaver 24X.

Good Luck
Rup

Be sure to use the CCI BR2 primer. For reasons that are still unknown, at least to me, Varget works best with CCI's BenchRest series of primers.

Sierra 175 and 4064 will handle all of it, 200 - 1000.

Hey Rup! Don't tell Hotcore about that universally good recipe! [Big Grin]

He'll never believe it!

(Thanks for the mention, I'm glad the load worked for you). [Wink]

The 46 grain Varget recipe has the added nicety of having virtually a zero temperature coefficient. I've done the tests, and the "extreme powder" temperature insensitivity claims are highly inflated. This one, however, works as advertised.

My 308 sure likes 45 grains of Rel-15 and Federal LR primers with the 155, 165, bullet. Rel-15 is also a proven powder in the 308 case. BLC#2 has given me some fine groups in the 308 case.

Lots of powders shoot well in the .308. I find Re-15, AA2520, and 2460, IMR 4320, and H4895 all work well.
Bullets, however, are a different story. If you can push it fast enough, and have it shoot well at extended ranges, the 155 gr. Sierra Palma bullet is a good one. Many rifles don't do well with it. The 168 gr. Sierra MatchKing works fine up to about 600 yds. But after that the 175 gr. Matchking takes over. Both the Palma bullet, and the 175 gr. MK hold their high BC's better than the 168 gr. MK., and, therefore, resist wind better. The Palma bullet has the advantage of more velocity, and the 175 has a better BC which comes into play at ranges over 600 yds.
Don't forget to test at these ranges. I've got a buddy whose Remington 700 VSF only shoots 1.25 MOA, or worse groups at 100 yds. But it regularly shoots .6 MOA groups at 800 yds. with the Federal 175 gr. Match ammo. E

Mine loves 44 grs of Varget and 168 MatchKings. Haven't shot it at 1000, but it works fine out to 750.

It also likes Win 748 just as well.

Try these two powders, you should find a load that works.
