To All,

Why do you suppose that the 7 WSM is not getting the press and reloading attention that the .300 & .270 shortys are? Is there a problem with this round?

I was getting ready to build a .280 Rem. when the 7 WSM came out and I took that path. I am now getting ready to set the gun up and start to re-load after I have completed the break-in.

Any recommendations for loads?

Are there some known problems with this round?

Is the RSUM vs.the WSM showing any real difference in the end results for reloading in the 7mm?

I appreciate your time and comments.

Cheers,

Sam

Sam,
the "only" 7 that gets the "proper" attention in american is the 7 rem mag...
the 7x57 is only used by "codgers"
the 708 is "well, it aint a 243 or a 308.. let's buy a 270"
the 280/7express... again "let's buy a 270"
7 SH... awesome round... ignored
7 weatherby? hell, i haven't even SEEN one or a round.

The US is "fixed" on 3 rounds, IMHO, for rifles... and is even MORE fixed that anything over 30 caliber is a bigin...
30-06 (granddad's elk slayer)
270 (dad's deer gun)
243/6mm. (wife and kids gun)

And it doesn't matter than you or I don't own any of those (i do have a 30-06, but it's a 1903a3 97% rifle) they are THE most popular...

with the 270, it kicks less than the 30-06, and your average bubba don't know what boot is...

the 280, well, all his friends don't have one.

for what it's worth, I think that the 7 and an 338 based OFF the 7 case (it's slightly larger) would be a fantastic set of ultralight, teflon'ed stainless, "brown" ultralight stocked model 70s.

I think winchester drug their feet to long in getting it out. But for that matter, I don't hear to many references to the remington version, either.

The 7mm WSM was released later than the 270 and 300 WSM's as it was discovered that a 7mm WSM based on the other parent cases might chamber in a 270 WSM. For this reason the 7mm WSM was redesigned and it has a shoulder that's .035" longer than the others.

I ordered a 7mm WSM M70 Classic SS late in the summer of 2002 and came in October 2002. The rifle is now one of my best but the injection molded stock that Winchester put on that rifle was fitted wrong, the recoil pad is too hard and finally that material is so hard to work with that I replaced the stock.

The barrel and action are superb and the cartridge puts out all the velocity that common sense says it will. With a 120 varmint bullet or a 140 gr game bullet RL 22 works very well with magnum primers.

There are so many cartridges out now and more coming out each month that who know's if the 7mm WSM is going to catch on. If I had to bet I would say that it will not and only because of it's late introduction. Otherwise it may have bested the 270 WSM. The SAUM cartridges are just about dead from what I see so far.

Shot one a few weeks ago in a Rem 700 rebarreled with a 24" Hart bbl. Funny to me was the fact that this 700 WAS originally one of the REM short mags and the guy rebarreled to the Win flavor.
Anyway...... like shooting a slightly anemic 7mm mag. OR a .280 Rem on steroids. Accurate and pleasant to shoot.
