Does anybody have some starting data for the 450 Rigby with Hornady 500grain SP and Woodleight 480grain SP.

Perhaps there are som websites that includes this spectacular round.

Is it by the way possible to use 450 Dakota loads and / or reduced 460 Wheatherby loads trying to get 2400 fps..? Should I start with 20 grain less than normal Wheatherby load or what?

Thankfull for all info on this

If you are talking about the .450 Rigby 2.4", you are not going to get 2400 fps!

The standard load for that is around 85 grains of black powder and a 480 grain lead bullet. It will get you around 1350 fps.....out of a 34" barrel!

Thomas,
Email me a request for this load data, with the powders, bullets, and barrel length you plan to use. I will then run the quickload for you.
jeffe

with the Hornady's, and a 23.5" barrel
2300 is should easy

Woodleighs 480s
2360...

this is lower pressure loads, so I am sure if you really wanted to you could do more.

I think he is talking about the 450 rigby that is just a 416 rigby necked up, and an almost twin to the dakota.

If it were me, I would reduce 450 dakota data a tad and start there. Quickload is a good reference, but sometimes it gives weird results in big bores.

Thomas M: In 1998, I built a .450Rigby using a Ruger .416Rigby as a starter. I had it re-bored to .45calibre, and chambered to .450Rigby (The rifle went thru several more changes, but that is another story)
I used .416Rigby brass, and fire-formed to the chamber. The loads I used, were as follows:
95 grs IMR 3031 = 2423fps
100 grs IMR 4895 = 2395fps
110 grs IMR 4831 = 2420fps
All bullets were 500gr Hornady, both soft point and solid. There were only slight differences in velocities from SP to FMJ, and accuracy was acceptable.
Good luck, JLS
