I like the price of the Shooting Chronys and wonder if any of you has had any experience with this brand. I have previously used a borrowed PACT and it gave me fits. Erratic readings that could not possibly be real. Maybe operator error, maybe low battery? Anyway, who can give me a little guidance on this? Thanks, Mike.

I own an Oelher and would buy a Shooting Chrony if I had to do it again.

Just as accurate and much, much, much easier to set up. I feel like I am building a ballistics lab when I drag that thing to the range.

Sometimes I give up and my friend brings along a Shooting Chrony, doesn't get much quicker.

Mike in SC,
I have been using the Chronys for over ten years. They have really improved with later models. Nowadays the new models are good enough. Of course the Oehlers are great.
The Shooting Chronys are good enough, IMHO.

I might buy an Oehler if I saw one for sale while shopping, but since I can pick up a Chrony at the local gun shop, that is what I do. I just haven't bothered to order an Oehler because I seem to get good, believable, consistent results with the Chronys. You won't see me posting any wild velocity numbers.

Chrony: Good! :

My only complaint is that when the sun dips low, readings are few and far between. Since I'm so far north, thats mid-day sun in the winter, but the range is off the water, and with the snow, I'm sure the lighting is a challenge to say the least.

Other then that, for $50 for my factory refurb, I've been very happy. Accuracy is spot on, its the missed readings that get agrivating. It is easy to set up, my rangesessions are at lunchtime, so a quick set up is an asset. I don't even have the fancy remote reading model, just use the scope to see the reading, write in a notebook, and that's my lowtech urban redneck balistic laboratory.

Appreciate all the prompt responses. Looks like the SC gets the nod. Not too mention it fits the budget nicely. Thanks, Mike.

I had a shooting chrony for years, I wouldn't have another one, they are too light sensitive....and fail a lot...

I have a pro-chrono now and I like it much better..

After e-mailing Oehler the other day, I got a brochure in the mail today. In it, it says that dealers ordering 2 or more get a 10% discount, ordering 4 or more get you a 20% discount, and gun dealers having an add in the yellow pages, automatically get the 20% on just 1 or more. Now I'm not a gun dealer, nor do I have an ad in the yellow pages. But I do have a resellers permit for computers, and parts. Wouldn't it be nice to get 4 or more people together wanting the Oehler 35P, and getting a $70 dollor discount off the $345 asking price. Don't know if they would go along, but the brochure doesn't say what kind of dealer.

Just a thought,

Phil

I have two Shooting Chronys and they give two different readings every time up to 150fps and on ave. 60-100fps. They alternate too, one being high one time the other the next just to frustrate me I think. If the Oehler I'm ordering does this too I won't be happy at all, please...... tell me it won't.

One other thing, don't buy the one with the remote LCD, it's a pain if simple is what you want. Besides you can easily read them from even 20' away anyway. I'm sure the Oehler will be a real treat to set up, but the accuracy and consistancy is what I'm after.

had to send mine back for repair...I shot it. At least I shot it "in style" as it took a hit from my .500. Clipped the front part, I shot too low as the light was bad. I have earned that if you put up the white plastic screens it thinks these are clouds and is able to see the bullet almost every time.
I also bought the upgrade to the 15' remote as the last LCD display was getting chewed up by unburnt H4831sc in my low-recoil loads.

I have used the SC quite a bit. I shoot at the range with a friend and we have several of the same guns/cartridges. I haven't owned a more expensive chronograph so I can't compare.

I can say our results with the shooting chrony are very repeatable and that I like.

If we are off by 50-75 fps so what, its a helluva lot closer than not having one.

I think its a good deal for the money, I've even thought about buying another, I've seen them for around $80.

It appears from the locations of the folks posting that the light issue may be of the biggest concern. Most of you guys having trouble with the unit are way up north compared to me. We definitly don't have a light problem here maybe too much!

Mike,
Right! Even here in Kentucky, the Shooting Chrony is useless if the angle of the sun is low, or if it is too overcast and dark. I always wait for proper light conditions or don't use it. It would be great to use indoors with artificial lighting overhead, always constant as in a setup such as Saeed's tunnel with flourescent lighting over the Chrony, though he uses an Oehler.

No chronograph will work properly in all "light conditions," especially at sunrise, sunset, and darkness.

Surely the Oehler is good, but as others have said better for a fixed position in a lab a la Saeed.

I would rather run out to the range with a Shooting Chrony on a camera tripod. That is enough of a hassle to set up and take down and pack around with ease. The newer ones are good enough. Have one of the first models and one of the newer ones. I need to go get the newest and sacrifice the older ones to the gods by shooting a 50 BMG through it at 300 yards to get a BC on a prototype bullet. :
