Are there any objections or recommedations to 24 grains of Hodgdon 110 with a mag primer behind a Hornady XTP 240 grain JHP? Whitetail deer out to 100 yards and possibly a hog would be my main targets.

The Hornady loading book lists 24,8grs H110 as max. load behind an 240grs bullet. Hornady doesn´t use a Mag primer, but I would use a one, with so many propelant. Martin

I do not feel the need to really push the envelope, but how "conservative" do you think the Hornady data is?

Are there any other suggestions for a do-it-all bullet? I want one round that I can hunt and shoot paper with too without breaking the bank.

I use that powder charge in my 9.5" Super with 300 grain XTP's (and sometimes a little more). Best shooting load ever and is very accurate even to long range (300+ yards). Too bad I cannot use this load any more; I now have to use XPB's as I am in CA. Been working with them (have to cut new crimp groves) to get good long range performance.

Thanks Doug! Out of curiousity, what is the max load that you have shot with the H110? I have a hard time imagining 300 yards wit my rifle, let alone a handgun!

My buddies dad does a lot of shooting and reloading. He recommended cast bullets from Western Bullet Co. but mentioned lead fouling in the barrel. I just do not want to have to worry about bronze wool and all that. I want to shoot it, clean it and put it away until the next go round. I cannot wait to see what it does on deer?

I too use the 300 Gr. XTP in my 9 1/2' SRH , only with 20 Gr. of W-296 . Which they say is the same powder as H-110 . It's easily Min. of Blackbear or Deer , and hit's very very hard ! Don't forget to have your Liberals spayed or neutered !

I really hate to say as it is way over what is in the books, and could be unsafe in other guns, with other powder lots, etc. I belive the max in manuals is 24 grains when crimped in the second (lower) groove. I was just bringing it up to show that the 24 grain charge is very safe. I did shoot a lot of loads at 25 grains, but in the end settled on 24 grains for hunting, practice, and long range shooting.

Our go to .44 mag. load is 200gr. JHP and 26.5 grains of #296 and mag. primer. Shoot it all day and works well for us.

Are the deer in your state Armor plated??? There is going to be a lot of wasted enrgy with that heavy load... The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Heck no, these small North Carolina deer are no match for 240 grains. However, I want something that I can potentially hog hunt with too and/or take back to my home state of Ohio and shoot larger deer. I just do not want to have to worry about changing bullets, loads, etc.... I want the RONCO "set it and forget it" concept.

I like the 300 grain XTP because of it's higher B.C. for long range shooting, and because it seems more effecient in revolvers (with 240's you get around 1,400 fps, and with the 300's you get around 1,400 fps). It is a wonderfull load...I am so bummed that I cannot use it anymore!

You can still use it, you just gotta move the heck out of there!

I load 19.5-20.5 grns H110 behind 300grn CastCore WFNGCs. Ruger SBH and Winch. trapper love them. Ain't had nothin yet run off after being hit w/ one of those loads. Funny thing is the SBH loves 300grn XTPs and the Winch. loves the Castcore and Nosler 300grn JHP. Made some reaaly good shots w/ the 16" Trapper w/ open sights. Whatever fits you guns. Good shootin'. Best all around jacketed bullet is probably the 270 gr Speer Deep Curl. Bonded jacket, heavier punch, still go 1350 with 20.5 gr H110.
