I had purchased a box of Sierra 7mm .284- 168gr.
HPBT last week at Bass Pro store. This box was
and is clearly marked and on the shelf for sale.
When I got them home, I opened the box and to my disbelief the box was full of red tipped cannelured (41) 139gr SST's and (57) flat based
cannelured 140gr. spitzers. Apparently someone had
switched returned the bullets and the store employee had not even noticed the differance. The
people that inhabit that place never seem to know
anything about the merchandise and I am getting a
little tired of this type of service so I won't be
going back there other than to exchange the bullets. They also leave the loaded ammunition out
on the floor shelves where anyone could open the
boxes and tamper with the cartridges. They are
leaving themselves wide open for disaster I think.
I am trying to contact the management about this
incident but I thought you all need to be warned!
Anybody else had a similar experience, I would be
interested! BLR7 [Confused] [Cool]

I'm not the least bit surprised... I've bought boxes off the shelves with the seals broken, thinking that some bozo just wanted a "peek" inside to see "whut kind uh boolits 'em are..."

And I've been shorted a few bullets this way, but have never had as bad an experience as you did...

Perhaps you could give the "bonus" [Big Grin] bullets a try--it might be a blessing in disguise.

If the store won't replace the bullets, give Sierra a jingle... You'll find out what customer service is all about, I assure you. [Wink]

Of course the moral is to examine the factory seals closely before next purchase. This is even more important (for obvious reasons) when you're buying powder.

That is a terrible thing. But SURELY some jackass counter worker would not take back powder. ??? How could you tell if the powder was opened? That could lead to disaster.

Its not just tampering. I ordered a box of .357 gr gold dot bullets, from midway. I received a box labeled .357. I looked at them no canelure, I miked them .355. They were 9MM bullets. I called Speer and they apoligized and sent me a box of .357 bullets. I figure the box was either mislabeled after filling, or was filled with the wrong bullets. The box had not been tampered with. I still have the box of incorrect bullets as a keepsake and to remind me that if it doesn't look right it probably isn't.

This thread has convinced me that from now on I need to carefully inspect the seals on components, especially powder. And yes, I believe that there are those ignorant enough to accept returned powder.

I mention this myself a couple of weeks ago on another thread.
I bought a box of Federal prem. Game Kings and harvested a mule deer with them. I recovered the bullet and was not impressed with what was left. I didnt make the discovery til later but noticed no boat tail.
I bought up all the stock of 2506 from my friends shop over hunting season and I think I know what happened. The last 3 boxes of ammo I purchased included one box of Fed Classic loaded with Pro Hunters. When I was at the range I was firing Game Kings instead of Pro Hunters. And the reverse when I killed my deer. Someone must have swapped by accident.
When ever I buy a box of factory ammo there is no seal sticker of any sort. I allways check to see if the seal has been broke on powder though.

I once purchased some H 1000 for a 7mm stw started loading at recommended min first shot bolt was incredably sticky. thought I must of screwed up the charge some how, went back to the bench double checked everything tried again this time i had to use a hammer to open bolt and primer fell out. I suspect it had the burn rate of 4350 but was not going to find out.

I know a guy, ( my Taxadermist ) who bought a bow of Winchester Supreme failsafes for Moose hunting when they came out. Having never seen the bullet before he had no idea they were realy loaded with Ballistic Tips. Disaster is the only word to describe the result of a moose being chewed to death as he tried his damdest to finish it off.
