Question does the 375h&H loaded with a 250gr. bullet take 10 more grains of powder to acheive the same velocity of the 338 with a 250gr. bullet? My reloader book shows this with the speed about 2650fps in both rifles. Why is this?Would the 375 have more recoil as well to get the same speed as the 338?!10gr. of powder seems like a lot to me especially after you load 100 rounds, also with the 225gr.hornady bullet -will the 375 be about like the 376steyr loaded with a 225 grainer?Seems to me down loading the 375 will meet a lot lesser rounds and would be like several rifles in one.Even the 200grainer will match the 356 or the 358 winchester or the 35whelen.Are my comparisions correct with these bullets and down loaded powder charges?seems like the 375 can do a lot of things big and small! thumbIs this why you guys say the 375 is the best gun for everything and everyone needs one or two beer

personally I don't believe we should compare the .375 H&H to the 338 magnum.

I say this because the typical bullets used in the .375 are heavier constructed for much larger game.

If the game is reasonably hunted with a .338 then I would prefer it over the .375 any day.

However (having not been there) I wouldn't intentionally choose a .338 with any bullet for damgerous game as the typical bullets for that cartridge are not heavily enough constructed.

I've used the .375 H&H on smaller game (whitetails) with very poor results......375 hole in and .375 hole out...yes the deer died but the bullet was just far too much for that small a target.

Regarding recoil:.....they both kick the snot out of me at the bench......and equally so. However both are reasonably mild in off hand shooting.

Yes, the H & H will burn more powder to push the 250 grain bullet (over the .338) as it has a greater combustion chamber and needs to fill it to keep the pressure on the bullet.

I really don't think this is an issue however.

If you're hunting anything smaller than kodiac bears the .338 is probably the better choice.

John Gannaway said the .375 H&H is like black shoes, everybody needs a pair.

I have owned all three. The .338 is now hunting elk in Oregon with my nephew, one .375 H&H is sold to an African hunter. I use the .376 Steyr for more and more. With the 270 grain bullet is is noticeably lighter in recoil than my H&Hs. It is an excellent cartridge for North America, and works in Africa too.
