I want to experiment with some slower burning powders for the 6MM Rem AI pushing 105 VLD Bergers. I am considering these powders. Can you tell me which ones you would prefer and why.

IMR 7828
Norma MRP
R25
H1000
Ramshot Big Boy
Vihtauvori N560

Tell me how much water your case holds. I ran it on a internal program as 50 gr of water and it likes 4831. Might as well mention the COL, bullet length and barrel length.

Haze,

I use VihtaVuori powders all the time, and like them very much. However, in this case it depends very much on what you intend to use the ammunition for. The Vit 500-series powders cause a blinding muzzle-flash, so if you would be hunting at dawn/dusk, I would have to say don't bother. If on the other hand it's all on the range - which seems likely with that bullet choice - give it a try. I have hear talk of throat erosion issues with this powder, but Vit have put additives in to prevent this, and I've never met anyone who experienced it personally.

The Ramshot powders are made in Belgium, and are reported to be more temperature stable, and cleaner burning than conventional ball powders.

The Ramshot "Big Boy" is now known as "Magnum." They renamed the Big Boy to prevent confusion with thier "Big Game" powder. I think the Ramshot Big Game might do you a better turn here. I think you'd get better velocity from the Big Game's slightly faster burn.

My barrel is 26" long. The case will hold 52 gr of water to the base of the neck. So I am thinking I could get 52 to 54 grains of powder. Has anyone tried this before. My thinking is that a full case is the best, the R22 and 4831 top out about 48 gr, so there is a small amount of free space below the bullet. I was thinking something slightly slower would give a full case.

haze,

I need your water capacity to the top of the neck. The answer must be around 62 grains. Also I need the length of that 105 but 1.1" must be close. You got me interested in such a cartridge and I looked in my 1960 edition of Speers Handbook for Wildcat Cartridges. There is a nice write up on the .240 Page Super Pooper. That case has a 28 degree shoulder and will push a 105 Speer to about 3100 with 4831.

I would follow what Warren Page did 50 years ago. That's a good trail to follow. RL 22 and 7828 will fill the case it seems also.

I like 4831 a lot.

For mollied 105s (A-Max's) in a SAAMI 6mm Rem, I use 46 of I4350. If I remember correctly, I get 3150 or so out of my 28" barrel. It's max in my rifle.

This rifle also prefers DEEP seated bullets - often 50 thou off! Weird, but it shoots!

Sorry it took so long for me to respond. I measured the case full of water to the brim and it weighed in at 60.2 grs. I don't know the length of the 105 berger as I don't have any left to measure this moment in time, but I would say about 1.0 to 1.1". My barrel is 26". Any info you care to share is appreciated.

Using your numbers this program has many powders that are suggested. The one with the top velocity is RL22 with 44.1 gr for start at 3030 fps and 49 gr max at 3170 fps. Imr 7828 starts at 44.2 gr and 3000 fps and 49.1 is max at 3150. There are many other powders in this program and Vit 165 seems similar to RL22.

Why not buy the program at www.aement.com It's only about $30 and you will keep refering to it.

I trust imr so thats the one I would use.

thanks, I'll take a look at the program. I think I am going to try the 7823 and see how it does.
