I've tried 4064 with the 100 grainers but IMR4831 was much better accuracy and velocity wise.

BTW, my loads are with the old red box Nosler Solid Base and Speer 105 gr. bullets. My rifle is a 40 year old Remington M700.

Hope this helps.

I am loading a .243 100gr Sierra BTSP with IMR 4064 powder. Anyone have any loads with velocities they would like to share? The Sierra Co claims 2900+ with 36.0 gr of 4064 with that bullet out of a 22" tube. Can anyone back them up? (obviously i don't have access to a chrono--yet) I loaded up to 36.0 and am getting .5 inch groups-- (just curious about velocity other folks may be getting) I would like to try Re22 as well, but the last lot of powder I bought is spraying a variety of bullets all over the place. I thought it was me at first but after trying 2 different bullets at many different charges, I'm going to blame the powder. The last lot I had shot 1 inch groups....very strange. Any .243 loaders out there care to help?

Although I don't routinely use the 100 grain bullets (prefer the Sierra 85 HPBT) in the .243, I found that IMR-4831 was the powder of choice.

IMR-4064 was great with 70 grain bullets...but that was about all.

While 4064 is somewhat too fast burning for optimum velocities/pressures in a .243 using 100 grain bullets, the estimate of 2900 fps is probably about right. I've never tried this combination in any of my four .243's, but the result in any of them would be no more meaningful as an indication of what your particular rifle is doing than the result in the rifle used for the loading manual data. Every rifle is different.

Powders like 4350 and H4831 generally provide the best results with the .243/100. However, if 2900 fps is enough velocity to satisfy you (and it is more than most factory loads provide), then there is certainly nothing wrong with your current load and its excellent accuracy. The only one of my .243's in which I use a 100 grain bullet gets a tad over 3100 fps using a stout load of H4831 from a 23" barrel. I think this may be a little "faster" barrel than the average .243.

I loaded some H335 listed in my Nosler reloading manual as a mid range load for the .243. The first shot in a new rifle and the bolt froze and had to beat the crap out of the bolt to open it and get the shell out. I will never use H335 in a .243 again it does work great in a .223. Just thought I would let you know my experience with H335 so you don't have to find out the hard way.

My most accurate load is the Sierra 70 HPBT matchking bullet with IMR 4064....it will shoot under a half inch all day long. I used to have many different kinds of powders for my 3 guns. (.243, 300 WSM and 45/70) but now i find all my best loads on these guns come from 4064 so i was hoping to stay with that powder for the 100 gr Sierras. 2900 fps would be great for me, 3000 would be fine too, but i dont' need to go faster, although i could probably get more from another powder. I have found both Nosler and Sierra Loading manuals to be pretty accurate as far as my guns go (for velocity) I used a chrono a few years ago and measured all my loads (obviously not the new 100 gr load though) So I was just tryting to ge ta good idea of what I was shooting. I know rifles vary in their velocities, but I'm pretty confident that i'm around 2900-3000. Maybe I'll break down and buy a chrono.......

I have had problems with 4350 being tempature sensitive. I use to load it all of the time in my 30-06 with 150gr BT it was very accurate, but what was not to hot in the winter would be showing pressure signs in the summer.

Today I was testing some MidSouth bulk 100gr 6mm bullets in my Ruger varminter 26" barrel.Win cases, CCI mag primers, 2.7OAL

1. 36.2 gr. Accurate 4064, (2912 to 2974 fps). Sooty necks and primers were hardly flattened. Appeared mild. 10 shot 1" group at 50 yds. Close to relative

2. 39gr. Accurate 4350 (2946 to 2981 fps). HOT barrel, mild, 5 shot 1/4" group.

3. 36.2gr. IMR 7383 (2653 to 2751)mild, dirty, 12 shot 1 1/2" group. All powder seemed to burn.

4. 46 gr. 5010 (2312 to 2401fps.) HOT barrel,really mild, a very little unburned powder, 12 shot 1" group at 50 yds.

5. 20gr. BLUE Dot (2393 to 2447fps.)HOT barrel,mild, 10 shot 1" grp. 12 shot 1 1/2" grp. Two flyers

These 100gr. 6mm, Mid South bullets cost 5.7 cents ea. or $11.40/200. I definitely will reorder some. roger

i have used imr4064 100gr nosler fbbt and the velocities out of a 22" barrel was 2840f/s. with imr 4350 they were at 2955f/s. most of the published loads that i am comparing to use a 24 or 26" barrel and others unspecified length.
