I have a box of Speer 500 grain bullets with a tungsten core. They are great bullets.

Does anyone else make tungsten core bullets in .458 caliber?
I am especially interested in 400 grain bullets.

Thanks,

Garrett

If you have the 458 African Grand Slam by Speer. They are discontinued I believe. I loaded some in my 460 WBy and they were fine but never hunted with them. They were crazy expensive when they came out and Midway blew them out (couldn't give them away) for about 75% off in the end. I heard various stories of their performance but nothing documented. Seemed like a good idea but there are MANY variables with a composite bullet.

Did you have some results you could share?

Only fired two bullets out of the box (both at paper).

A 400 grain bullet interests me more.

I got a couple of boxes of them along with about 20 boxes of other .458 bullets. I have killed impala, bushbuck, and buffalo with them quite nicely. They also shoot well in my .458 Lott (1 to 1-1/2 inch three shot groups at 100 yards). I suspect that they were just too expensive to sell well. Because of a shorter overall length, they would allow for more powder or lower pressures in a .458 Winchester Magnum.

Holy tamole.....when they first came out they were $5 a piece and I thought they were expensive!!! We're talking about $10 per trigger pull and for sighting in and practicing this gets expensive real quick!

Personal use of the Speer 500 grain Tungston Solid. I can say they are good stuff for hippo.
On that safari, I left the balance of the 40 solids factory loaded as Speer Nitrex with the PH Rolf Rohwer.
He thinks they are the best thing since sliced bread for elephant charges.
